+Kenith
Help, I just got a new laptop that does not have a "regular" serial port. I use a Garmin Legend GPS and tried a generic adapter to connect to the laptop, but still cannot get the laptop to see the GPS. I've called Garmin and nothing they suggest has helped. Does anyone have any suggestions?? Ken Quote Link to comment
+Renegade Knight
My cache partner had a similar problem. It turned out to be that the serial port had to be 'enabled' or changed in the windows xp operating system to function as intended. The hardware was fine. The software needed a hammer. +HartClimbs
I'm in the same boat. The new Thinkpad I have does not include a serial port (unless you use the docking station). I picked up a USB/Serial Port converter and it works fine (shows up as COM4). I just connected the GPS cable to the serial end of the converter - plug the USB connector into the laptop and it's connected. I've read other threads here where people have received mixed results with this type of converter - but it seems to be working fine for me. Good luck - hope this helps.... Quote Link to comment
