+Yanke
What is archiving? A way to let others know that a spot has been compromised and not to hide their cache there? The earth does not belong to us. We belong to the earth. Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
It's simply the retirement of the cache. When a cache is archived, it no longer shows up a "nearest cache" search. Caches are archived if they are missing, or if the owner removes it for whatever reason. The owner can also choose to disable the cache. This usually means that the cache is gone, or damaged and the owner intends to replace it. Once it's archived, anyone is free to use that spot if they wish...but it probably isn't a good idea because caches are usually archived for a good reason. You might want to e-mail the original cache owner to find out why it was archived. Perhaps they were simply tired of, or unable to maintain it, or maybe it was accidently placed on private land, or there are some other issues.
