dsandbro
A group of firefighters are trying to locate memorials for wildland firefighters and post the information, including coordinates, on a web page. Many have been submitted so far, many more need to be identified. If you know of any near you please go over to http://www.wildlandfire.com/theysaid.htm and post the info. A list so far is found at http://www.wildlandfire2.com/docs/memorials.htm but not all have coordinates listed. If any of those listed without coordinates are near you consider going there and obtaining the coordinates and send them the web site. And say a prayer for those who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect life, property, and natural resources. =========================================================== "The time has come" the Walrus said "to speak of many things; of shoes and ships and sealing wax, of cabbages and Kings". +briansnat
There is one in the Catskils (NY) dedicated to two guys who lost their lives fighting a fire there. I've seen it. It's pretty much in the middle of nowhere. I just forget where it was. Maybe you NY geocaches can help out. "Give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. Team Sidewinder
In Montana there is the Mann Gulch Memorial Cache GCC 16. It was placed by Bruce and Jon Straughn. We have visited the site and it is a somber reminder of those who gave the supreme sacrifice fighting wildland fires. 13 smokejumpers perished on that horrible day. 11 on the hillside and 2 more died in the hospital the next day. This happened on August 5 1949 and just because it happened that long ago it is still such a tragedy. Hopefully mistakes made in these situations will prevent other deaths from happening. I can provide more info if needed. Team Sidewinder LOST AND FOUND DEPT [This message was edited by SIDEWINDER on July 25, 2003 at 04:37 PM.] Quote Link to comment
+volleygod
I have found one as well. It is on top of Kingston's Peak in Colorado. I don't have to co-ords but can get them if needed. Here are some pixs of the memorial. http://community.webshots.com/scripts/editPhotos.fcgi?action=viewall&albumID=81279788 No matter where you go, there you are! Quote Link to comment
