Cache Canucks Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 quote:Originally posted by Accident_Prone_Hiker:"...Apparently concerns can't be voiced without some individuals blowing them out of proportion..." "...I am shocked by the irresponsibility evidenced by some of you..." I think that you can still find some solace: 1. The vast majority of GeoCachers rarely (if ever) post in these forums; 2. Of those who do, there are several(many?) who simply enjoy argument for argument's sake. Start a forum by stating that placing an armed mousetrap into a cache is 'bad', and you'll get people who'll defend their right to do so 'just because'; and 3. Folks tend to respond more to forum posts that they disagree with, as opposed to ones which express ideas similar to their own. All that to say, don't let yourself become too disillusioned with 'The Human Condition' by anything that you may read in the forums. Common sense is, more often than not, still a common denominator among the group at large. Quote
+briansnat Posted March 23, 2003 Posted March 23, 2003 quote: Lighters, condoms, viagra, religious items, cigarettes, old Hustler magazines, alchohol... I don't think there's any good reason to include any of these items. It's a family activity folks. I'm hardly a prude but I don't want my kids stumbling across this stuff How does a lighter fall into the same category as Hustler magazines, cigarettes, condoms and alcohol? I keep one in my pack at all times. It is a useful tool. I don't smoke cigarettes, but I frequently find the lighter useful. Everything from sterilyzing a needle before I remove a splinter, to melting the end of my frayed boot laces. It also comes in handy starting fires and lighting my stove on backpacking trips and there is the chance it could save my life one day. Equating a tool like a lighter to comdoms and Hustler magazine? A different world than you apparently. I didn't equate the two to each other. Yes, a lighter is a handy thing to have, and I also carry one with me at all times. I don't give one to my five year old daughter to play with though. There are some things that are not really appropriate to leave in a cache -- lighters, and the other items are probably not a good idea. I certainly wouldn't freak out if I found any of these items in a cache (I have found some of these things in caches) but common sense tells me that there are people who might be offended by any of these items and for that reason I wouldn't leave them in a cache. Lighters are a bad idea because there is a real possiblity that an unsupervised child could find one in a cache and potentially create a dangerous situation for themselves and others. It's a matter of safety. Sounds to me like you're just trying to be antagonistic. Perhaps your time would be better with a Hustler magazine, if you get my drift (you could use a lighter to illuminate it under your sheets.) ----- Quote

+Team GPSaxophone Posted March 23, 2003 Posted March 23, 2003 What if you were having a really bad day Geocaching and forgot to bring your survival gear with you? Finding a lighter in a cache could save your life! Besides, how many kids under 10 cache alone anyway? (I figure by 10 they would know enough not to start a fire unless they wanted to and they aren't going to hike 2 miles through thorns to find a lighter anyway) Quote
+RJFerret Posted March 24, 2003 Posted March 24, 2003 Around here, it's illegal to leave kids alone, even in your own locked car or house. People have been arrested for running into the store while the kids were hanging out in the car. When I was a kid, I wanted to stay in the car and read while my Mom went grocery shopping. Living a distance away from the store, those were lengthy trips and it was easier for her. People trying to "save" others pointlessly is annoying. People doing it based on far-fetched chances are NOT exercising common-sense or reason. However, there are like-minded people around. I was hiking with a group last Sunday and when we stopped for lunch, another female hiker was seen hiking alone with a small infant in a carrier in front of her. I thought it was great--a woman still participating in life, sharing a wonderful experience and environment despite the limited ability of the infant to perceive it, but giving them both some fresh air and excersise. Many (particulary the mothers in the group) were absolutely appalled! "She could fall and hurt the baby!" Yeesh, when she was pregnant she could have fallen--the baby was in the same position!! A far greater risk to the baby is riding in a car. Aristotle would be dissappointed... Randy PS: Let's see, from my personal sample, roughly 1 in 30 caches has a lighter. {grin} From Ed Hall's statistics there are currently 34,278 active caches in the US alone. That's perhaps 1,142 with lighters. So far, not one reported problem or issue. That's a 0% risk. But rest assured, I'm reasonable enough to realize this won't "convert" anybody feeling the other way (notice, I said "feeling", not "thinking"). That's fine, but I will continue to seek lighters in caches, so please everyone else, continue placing them! Quote
+GeoVamp Posted March 24, 2003 Posted March 24, 2003 I went to a cache of mine to change out the cache pod and I found a LIGHTER,A SMOKE, AND A CAMEL BUCK all left by the same cacher as trade "Fun is Fun, Done is Done"-Stephen King www.GeoVamp.com Quote
