Projecting Waypoint in Mils

Recommended Posts

My Garmin Legend appears to only allow the entry of a bearing in whole degrees, not portions of a degree, when projecting a waypoint. The "error" can be substantial depending on the rounding of the bearing and the distance over which it is projected.

While I can work out corrections to compensate for the problem or just calclate the new point directly, I was wondering if this unit provides a means to enter non-integer bearings? I thought mils might be an option, but I do not believe the Legend has this capability. Any suggestions

didn't see a need for decimal degrees in a bearing when they wrote the software for the GPSr.

My Magellan is the same as yours with only Whole number degrees.

If you can actually shift over to mils, I'd say go for it since the accuracy would be a whole lot better. icon_biggrin.gif

I've got a military compass that is in mils from dealing with Artillery.

It appears as though my Venture CAN do this. My only problem is actually calculating how many mils I would want my bearing to be since I only have a standard magnetic compass. I can calculate for mills by dividing my degrees by 360, then multiplying by 6400, but that doesn't make me any more accurate unless I actually have a compass that measures in mils. If you go to "Main Menu" --> "Setup" --> "Heading" you can select "Mils" in the display box. If you do this, you can input your projected waypoint bearing in mils, rather than degrees.

Thanks Greg, that does it. This will come in handy when the clues or directions for a geocache provide a bearing in portions of a degree. I haven't seen it happen many times, but last weekend I had one.

Thanks again.

is a graphic training aid used by the military which has both degrees and mils and is used in map reading. It is made of clear plastic and is square. icon_biggrin.gif
