Guest mickyd
I'M A GARMIN 12XL CACHER. HAD A PROBLEM AND SENT IT BACK TO GARMIN LAND. REPAIRED AND WORKING LIKE A CHAMP - NO COST TO ME. IT IS CHIPPED AND SCRATCHED, BEEN IN THE CREEK AND EXPOSED TO HEAVY DOWNPOUR.IT HAS ROLLED DOWN THE HILL AND EVEN HIT THE GROUND HARD ALL WITH ME IN TOW. NOT A SISSY SPORT THIS GEOCACHING.IT STILL PULLS IN THE SIGNAL IN AND GETS ME TO THE LOG BOOK. I'M SATISFIED. Quote Link to comment

Guest Klemmer
hs hiking before I heard about Geocaching. Looked at all the Garmins & Magellans for a Christmas present for my daughter & son-in-law. The are SERIOUS hikers, not Geocachers (50+ miles in 3 - 4 days in Yosemite). Got them one too! So - just count this for one. The Venture still seems the right price / features point to this engineer ..... a zillion cities around the world (used it in South America) .... WAAS equipped, too. Guest SnowTiger23
I just a purchased a Magellan 315. It's good but I burned through the batteries today. Wondering if this is normal. I picked it up at REI for $125, thought it was a steal. Didn't know it wasn't waterproof. Really thinking about the Garmin eTrex Venture instead. I've used the eTrex. Liked it. Any suggestions? Guest Ranz
SnowTiger23; Had my 315 since the model was released. Dunked it twice (didn't drop it, slipped in fast moving rivers). This unit has never given me a bit of trouble. The receiver is exceptional and the unit has been plenty rugged. My wife baught me a Meridian Gold for Christmas or I would still be happily caching with the 315. She will still be using it and it will be a good backup unit that I know I can always count on. As you can probably tell, I think you made an excellent choice. Quote Link to comment
Guest SnowTiger23
So Ranz, do you burn though the batteries on your 315? I swear I couldn't have used it for more than 3 or 4 hours and the battery alarm is already ringing. Or maybe I just got a bad batch of AAs? Quote Link to comment

Guest Ranz
SnowTiger: I think you had a bad batch, or maybe excessive use of the backlight. The 315 is rated for 18 to 22 hours but in truth it is closer to 14-15 hours. I ended up getting rechargeables because of the amount of use it gets since geocaching. That has saved me loads in the long run. One thought.. I remember when I first got it I put some "Heavy Duty" Ray-o-Vac batteries in it. They were not alkaline or anything. I got about 3 or 4 hours out of them. I was concerned about battery life then too. The next set I put in were alkalines and I haven't had a problem since. I didn't make the connection until now but that may be the problem. Let me know how you fare on the whole thing... Good Luck; Quote Link to comment
