My Magellan 300 served me well for my first 160 finds, when I purchased a Garmin e-trex Vista. I'm continuing to use the Magellan as a back up and in the car on the way to cache sites, because I have the cigarette lighter cord and don't feel like spending $40 for the Garmin cord. That's just rip-off. The Magellan's battery life seems to be at least six-fold that of the Garmin's.

 

My only complaint with the Magellan is how often it loses reception, and how long it takes to re-acquire signals. (It is usually faster to just shut it off and turn it back on.) The Vista holds reception much better.

 

My two complaints with the Vista to date are its extremely short battery life and its electronic compass . . . the compass is just too jumpy. Incidentally, I have yet to experience any apparent benefit from WAAS; and I know that is probably mostly because of how and where I use the unit. But on the couple of occassions when I noticed a WAAS satellite identifier, I still had only 14 foot accuracy. Turning the WAAS off yielded the same accuracy.

I've had a Garmin 12cx for about 3 years. Should get my new Garmin V tommorrow. I'll sell the 12cx to my friend. The more the merrier!

Hope to find my first cache on MLK weekend. Hide my first cache while I'm at it.

Garmin eTrex Vista

 

I've had it for about 6 months and have used it on 12 cache outings and except for the short battery life and the lack of an external antenna jack its been great.

Check out GPSgeek on eBay. He's pretty reasonable on accessories for the Garmins, and lots of people here have dealt with him. $10.95 for the cig.lighter cord for my 76.

to geocaching. It works very well and the batteries last over 10 hours. Used one set of batteries just for learning the unit/screens/etc. Still on the second set after 4 searches of 3 hours each. Love it.[ icon_smile.gif]

Dagnabbit! I should have never posted about my old Maggie 300 the other day. This evening, somewhere along the way to-or-from the 'Night Vision' geocache in NJ, it fell out of my pocket. I went back looking for it, but my night vision admittedly stinks. Guess I'll try again by the light of day.

Jolly old elf left a Garmin GPS-V in my stocking. I'm planning on using it for motorcycle trips but thought that the melding of that and cache-ing might make the trips a bit more interesting.

I purchased the Garmin GPS V before they came out so I can have it shipped to me the day they came out. I love it. This is the first GPS I own and I use it for 4 wheeling in my Jeep and when I travel using my laptop.

But the GOOD NEWS is, the next morning I found Maggie hanging in a bush. Marty621 sent me a clever suggestion that we put pieces of reflective tape on our gear, and it would make them easier to find. Great suggestion!

I know it's a bit late, but I also use the MLR SP24 and the available software for waypoints "PMS Waypoints & routes". I have some problems about this software, because it wouldn't recognize my SP24 but select another MLR GPS. The result of this is that the first letter in the description of every waypoint is missing.

 

Is there anyone who've tried the same?

Our Etrex Venture Is on the way!!

 

we were using my dads Etrex, but it is his...

 

After much careful thought we decided the Venture is the best one for the money. we decided we don't need streets built in, because we are smart enough to read a map especially since we know our location and bearing.
