BUT

I received an email from a cacher who attempted this cache and was very concerned. We decided to confirm what we were being told and drove there to look at first hand.

There are signs everywhere saying "Keep Out" and "Danger" etc. This is obviously a place which Geocaching.com cannot possibly condone visiting. Is climbing over a wall to gain access to a site permissible ?

The guidelines ( here ) clearly state :-

quote:

Off-limit (Physical) Caches

We're assuming that you asked permission to post your cache. However, if we see any listing description mentioning ignoring "No Trespassing" signs (or any other obvious issues), your listing will be automatically archived.

There are also hazard warnings around this site.

Sorry guy's, this one has to be archived.

Dan & Pid, I guess you did not retrieve the travel bug from this cache. Can you please confirm this before we email the bug owners. Meanwhile we will email the placers of this cache.

Tim & June (Winchester)

See June, I told you that sign which said 'Unsuitable for Motor Vehicles' was wrong ! icon_smile.gif

That cache rocks! Its the best ever! please dont archive it! pleeeeeeease. Even if it is against the rules its still fantastic.

The apperition is actually Dan breathing before he took the picture. LoL came out quite well actually.

Please save this cache! its brilliant

Didnt retrieve travel bug, someone else found the cache before us, and must have took it because it was not in there. Could someone perhaps move the cache to "VERY" nearby public land?

Having to risk one's life in a dilapidated and falling down building is not my idea of a cache that rocks - except in a more literal sense. icon_smile.gif

If it's a) very dangerous and :( off limits to the public, it has to be archived. Would it be such a good cache if it was outside the grounds in a safer / more legal location?

I have to agree with Tim and JeremyP on this one.

This is a real shame, the cache was truly amazing, and for me, was exactly what I would look for when browsing through the listings. However I am in total agreement with T+J that the cache has to be archived for now.

The area is extremely dangerous, and like T+J say there are warnings everywhere. The whole hospital is laced with asbestos and danger signs cover almost every door in the building. Taking kids here would be a very very bad idea, the place is like a maze with so many potential hazards. I like to think that Pid and I were just 2 people who decided to do this cache which was our choice. The same should apply to anyone else visiting in the future. It is a fantastic sight, with so many strange and eerie points of interest which is the disapointing thing when it comes to archiving it.

The travel bug concerned did not appear to be present but I have to say that we only realised it was present when we arrived home and logged our find, so we probably didnt search hard enough. It may possibly still be in the box so will need removing.

May I suggest with all due respect, that the planter does relocate the cache to public land close by. From here people could make their own desicion as to venture forth into the unknown or not. Removal of this cache completly would be a bad call as it would be a waste of such a good location. Thanx Mitnik & Crew for placing the cache and please don't let this discourage you from hiding more caches similar to this, some of us love them icon_smile.gif

On another note, the whole place is run-down, grafittied and seemed full of random youths. To my mind, that's exactly the sort of place that:

a) Caches will get trashed

:( Unsavoury youths may be found.

Now I'm not being anti-youthist here. I come under the heading of short-haired, mean-looking youth, but I wouldn't want to go to a cache site and be faced with all sorts of unsavoury characters.

Yes, that *could* happen anywhere, but from the photos, this site (to my mind) seems a much more likely place.

It's probably not the sort of place, from both building-falling-apart and meeting-unsavoury-people aspects, that anyone would want to try alone or in poor light. I notice even hardened night-cachers Dan & Pid did it during daylight hours!

Just my 2 pence.

Jeremy, I was actually joking The cche is great fun for me but I am in total agreement withthe Archive ofcourse it had to go, I never discouraged that I was just saying I loved it, which I did.

In agreement with moving the cache to public land close by, I wrote a note above the archive on the page suggesting this.

Would be a shame to see it go.

Cool, it certainly does deserve that!

As regards to Hugas post, I might add that despite what the pictures from my link suggest the location of the hospital is not in the middle of a city centre, infact nowhere near one, its as far in the country as any other cache the only reason there is graffiti and smashed glass is because people ofcourse like trashing. Most of the trashing was done in thelate 80s when Hooliganism was rife. Dont think you have any problems with louts nowadays the only poeple that go there are explorers like the kids we met. No one will trash it.

Its about a 20minute walk from the safest parking place anyway.

Just following on this thread with a medical comment.

Pid mentioned Asbestos through out the building.

For this alone this cache should be archived.

Exposure to asbestos poses a significant hazard, in a susceptible individual a few fibres are enough to cause a problem.

I wonder if the hospital was decomissioned before current legislation on asbestos...

We're the owners of that travel bug (Darth Vader). D&P, you seem to have different ideas about whether it was gone or simply buried in the cache.

Darth is a Lego keyring figure about 2 inches tall, so probably easy to miss? Did you notice the name of the previous visitor?

I'd welcome medical comment on recovery of the cache and the asbestos - presumably the cache has only been briefly open at the site, so do the contents now constitute a concern? If so, I'd rather write off Darth than put someone at risk.

I'm not an expert, but I think asbestos isn't dangerous unless it is in the dust form. While it's still solid there is no risk. The problems arise when you're trying to remove it or do building modifications (e.g. drilling a hole through an asbestos sheet creates a lot of dust and is therefore dangerous).

I don't think there will be a problem for the cache or it's contents.

Yup it's the dust that's the problem, but cracked/broken/vandalised asbestos as used in wall linings of many post war hospitals causes a dust risk.

I once worked in a hospital where sticking drawing pins into walls was forbidden as it was asbestos under the paint!

I don't think the cache contents would be a problem,

You might want to email the person to tell them to change the page, the TRACKING number is on there, so anyone could just grab it or post a note, really you need the reference number EG TB5A34 etc

You mean "20 minute walk from the NEAREST parking place..."

That would make it just like any other NHS hospital then wouldn't it? icon_biggrin.gif

Don't worry, as I understand it, Darth Vader's mask filters out asbestos particles so he's not in any danger...

The asbestos in the hospital is everywhere. I'm not an expert but in certain places the walls are crumbling and dust muffles the air, for instance in the animal labs.

Although there is a health risk visiting is still personal choice though and the hospital is a sight from outside the walls aswell as inside, hence my vote of moving the cache to the woodland suround.

I think this is just a case of a fairly new cacher not understanding the rules fully, I am certain no ill feelings were intended!

Darth has turned up in the hands of Teasel, who visited before D&P. Thanks.

I do indeed have Darth in my posession, but I don't think it was me you couldn't remember, as I visited the cache after you two, once the sun had safely set (photos here). I assumed I'd only just missed you but...

...tut, tut, D&P daylight caching?! What's become of you two? I guess you must have found the tales of the Flincher a bit too frightening!

I agree that the cache must be archived because it is in a fenced-off location, but not because it is dangerous. I wouldn't like to attempt Don't Look Down without specialist safety equipment, but I don't think it should be archived.

I would, however, have been happier if the cache description had indicated that, though the area is frequented by locals, you have to climb over a fence to get in, and there is an asbestos risk once inside. That way I could have made an informed choice as to whether to attempt the cache (yes), whether to wear a dust mask (maybe), and whether to take along my 4 month old son (no!).

I don't see a problem with legal but dangerous caches, so long as potential cachers are in no doubt about what is involved, preferably before they set off.

Hmm, I think you're right about that otherwise there would be endless arguments about what constitutes "too dangerous". I did one Blitz family cache which was just off the A34 (a busy dual carriageway) which would probably have been statistically far more dangerous than this hospital one had the description not mentioned the fact that you have to approach from the South to avoid getting run over.
