  1. Late post I know, but work gets in the way these days. When Mark was setting up GUK he had a logo competition, my son Mick had a go, his first real design on a computer. Although it was childish and obviously not slick mark sent mick a prize for having a go- he didn't have to- he did because he was a nice bloke. The world has lost a gentleman.
  2. Phred did this one a while back http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...E-14E31D650142} the container was incredibly heavy and a major piece of engineering. Don't know if there's any photos on the archived page. Minim
  3. one of the best password strategies I use for secure sites is to think of a phrase which includes a number, suchas "there are 3 cats in our house" the initial letters become the password i.e. ta3cioh If you use the name or detail of your service in the phrase it is easier to remember. e.g and fictitious "I have three accounts in lloyds bank"=ih3ailb For regular forced password changes I use one keyword plus number changes, the number being last month, so it would be eggplant10 this month, you can use a phrase with changing numbers for higher security. Hope this helps. Cache the Bug-Geocaching

  5. The issue for me hinges on abuse, I love reading other peoples accounts of "epic" caches, where the unusual or astounding has happened. It's one of the joys of trawling through the logs ( yes I'm that sad) I can understand that some people might like to share their joy at an odd find or two. The problem is we might get some who abuse the system and basically add topics to encourage visits to mediocre caches. So the problem remains, threads of This is my best cache ever. Or nowt. I agree about the backslapping though... Cache the Bug-Geocaching

  8. Dear Rockrat girl, I'm just a Lurker reading this thread, I have never met Team Blitz, but reading the post I didn't think there was any implied criticism of you at all.. I read a bit of humour and a desire to help. Relax, we are all cachers in search of something...usually a lunch box. Cache the Bug-Geocaching
  9. OK it was stupid I know, but do you know what happens when you leave a GPS on the back step of a Landrover and then close the back door? In the case of my Vista the display cracked. Garmin say it's beyond repair, but a replacement can be mine for approx £100. Less than 10 working days later it's here and I'm back in business. For info a few things have changed, the back opening clip is a little more robust, teh toggle button a litte easier to use, but the display seems a little less fine in its detail... still useful. I'm impressed with the deal, but why didn't they just say it cost £100 to repair? Cache the Bug-Geocaching
  10. You can get a PC version of the pocket reader from the mobipocket website. I haven't tried it but saw the link when downloading the PDA stuff for pocket PC. Cache the Bug-Geocaching
  11. I'm not so sure about this cache, I was bitten once on the leg by a corgi- very painful! Cache the Bug-Geocaching
  12. do you have to cross a fence or wall to get to the cache? Could you parachute there if you wanted? Cache the Bug-Geocaching
  13. So far so good, hopefully we can set a good precident. Keep up the good work and nice one Bramblers! Cache the Bug-Geocaching

  15. Is there now a ban on forestry commission land? I suppose if permission is not forthcoming there is a ban. So since we are law abiding citizens we will not plant caches in the forests. Therefore all rubbish will come from non geocachers. So to stop forest litter FC should ban people who aren't geocaching. Except most forest litter is caused by trees, so obviously they should ban trees. Seriously, I'm a little concerned here, we have a hobby, which encourages access to the countryside. The slight possibility that someone may break the rules and put alcohol in a cache (I'd say 1-2% based on found caches so far) means that we can't cache in the woods, despite cache in trash out actions. If only 1-2% of the UK population broke rules we would have no courts, no speed cameras, no crime- heres the 2002 figures http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2123249.stm Of course the forums only represent a percentage of UK cachers, so any opinion is also skewed, but I leave that to the statisticians amongst us to sort out. Personally I'd like to know if negotiations are truly beyond repair. Cache the Bug-Geocaching
  16. don't do it or allow the kids to.. Cache the Bug-Geocaching
  17. Are you sure? Could it be "one of those things?" Any figures or common features to the caches? Cache the Bug-Geocaching
  18. Mick and Myself do 40k. So a themed cache would be interesting. Having said that it would be the other end of the country! What would the forums opinion be of setting up something which could be construed as advertising the manufacturer? I ask now to avoid trouble later... Cache the Bug-Geocaching
  19. I think it's almost compulsory to examine the cache away form the hiding place. As mentioned keep an eye on the spot, but For us caching as a family three kids two adults in the undergrowth is a lot of people, so even dressed as tramps it wouldn't work! Cache the Bug-Geocaching
  20. ? Writes: Am I a troll? The Northumbrian and Good Shepherds think I am (Team Galaxy are newbies so can be forgiven). But dear ? what do you think you are? Why should others think you a troll ?,? If others thinking you are a troll is upsetting ? then how can you change to prevent this? You should ask your self ? why am I here ?, and then ? if you answer yourself you could say ?, I don't know ?, but will I find out by asking the forum?,? Cache the Bug-Geocaching
  21. Get stuck in once that GPS comes, the kids will love it! There's a thread somewhere on caching with kids- think it's in the general forum, not UK. Check it out- makes me feel normal Cache the Bug-Geocaching
  22. to another family team! it's almost compulsive after a while, but I'm only doing it for the kids.... Cache the Bug-Geocaching
  23. For us the pattern tends to be that Roo (6) leads us to the location, and Mick(9) finds the cache. My wife and I do clues and stuff or keep a sense check on which bush not to push through, but it's getting harder for me to find a cache before Mick. Our first cache was rated a 2, 2 but thanks to my stupidity it ended up more like a 4,4 That one made me think I should have done it first, but after that it really has been a family effort, we took Betsy cacheing aged 10 days! 24. We're well outside your patch but welcome to the fold. There's a thread somewhere on "things you learn from geocaching". Read it after your first cache- it's a goldmine! Cache the Bug-Geocaching
