Downloaded cache files not appearing

I have an Etrex 20. 

the 'Geocaches' function on it shows a list of named geocaches.

I've since tried downloading geocache GPX files to the Etrex from the Geocaching website cache pages and even though the file(s) appear to be loaded onto the GPS they do not then appear in the list of named geocaches.

The method I used to load the GPX file was to drag it from my PC download folder into the Etrex which was plugged into my pc.

So, how do I get a GPX file to appear in the list so I can access it?

You didn't say what folder you placed them on the Etrex.  You must place the GPX files into the folder Garmin/GPX.

Your answer sorted it!  I had just placed the file in the Garmin folder and not in the GPX sub folder.
