+The Wombles
There is a lecture on GPS next Thursday in Cheltenham. Unfortunately I can't attend but the details are posted here in case others are interested. THE SCIENCE OF GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEMS Dr. Malcolm Cornwall (The Open University) Thursday 30th October 2003 at 7:30pm (Refreshments from 7:00pm) University of Gloucestershire, Park Campus, Cheltenham (Room TC014, Elwes Building) Finding your exact location in an unfamiliar landscape; locating the exact positions of a delivery or bus fleet; landing aircraft automatically; measuring the minute displacement of a remote mountainside for earthquake or volcano prediction - these are among the many applications of the GPS, a system which requires nanosecond timing, but is accessible with handheld receivers for as little as £100. Dr Cornwall's talk will outline the geodetic and sophisticated electronic techniques that make this possible, and explain some of the applications - actual and potential - of GPS. Malcolm Cornwall FInstP was a Principal Lecturer in Physics and Energy Studies at the University of Brighton, and is an Associate Lecturer in IT and Society with the Open University. He has presented many popular talks and workshops on science and technology for the IOP and for other organisations. He is a former Chair and Secretary of the South Central Branch, and has been Deputy Editor of Physics Education. This is a joint event with the Institute of Physics. +Flackadder
Tempting, as I live in Cirencester. Only problem is that the talk will be WAY above my intellectual level. Which, as I am sure you have all guessed, lower than a snakes belly!! Bob.... http://www.bobh.co.uk 'Life, it's a game with one serious bit - geocaching!' Quote Link to comment
+Travers
Thanks for the info...and just for anyone else who may be tempted to look it up: geodetic Ge`o*det"ic, Geodetical Ge`o*det"ic*al, a. Of or pertaining to geodesy; obtained or determined by the operations of geodesy; engaged in geodesy; geodesic; as, geodetic surveying; geodetic observers. Ahhh, makes everything much clearer! Hey, Travers :-) I think the first language of most of the people reading these posts is english. Any chance of posting in english Even the 'Enigma' machine may have a problem de-ciphering you post. Cholo
quote:Originally posted by The Cuthberts:Drat ! Andy I feel your pain. Maybe a kind soul could take notes and post them here? And if Mr. Cornwall is taking questions, ask him to explain Geo. W. We're having trouble understanding that enigma here in the States. Quote Link to comment
+MoonHerb
That's quite spooky. I'm attending a lecture finishing at 7.15pm in TC114 this Thursday ! (it's in JAVA though, not as interesting as GPS.) I may well be tempted to miss the workshop to attend this ! ______________________________________________ Please visit our website - http://www.moonspace.co.uk/moonherb Quote Link to comment
