Satellite link for your PC

Recommended Posts

Those of you who made it to our little event last weekend will have spotted the small satellite dish we borrowed.

However, on Monday, my work took me to see Inmarsat, who insisted on lending our company an RBGAN (Regional Broadband Global Access Network) terminal (take a look at this web site to find out more).

The terminal is about the size of a laptop, and weighs a lot less. It includes a battery to run it for an hour, and has USB, LAN and bluetooth interfaces. Takes about 5 mins to get up & running (and that includes getting it out of its bag), and you end up with an (up to) 144k link (will be 432k in the future) via satellite to the internet.

It costs about £1k, and about £1.5 per MB to use (about same as roaming GPRS).... but has the advantage that, as long as you can see the satellite, you can use it anywhere (there are a few in use in Iraq right now!).

So, there you go, a new toy to add to your "must have" list!!!

I understand that the same place that you got the "new super duper GPS that you have acquired that only cost £17.50" is doing a special on these right now icon_wink.gif! Get 'em while they're hot icon_biggrin.gif
