The history of geocaching events

Can anybody tell me which event was the first one? How did geocaching-events arise? When and where did CITO, Mega and so on appear on the scene?

Here's a bookmark list I maintain on the subject of "firsts" - first cache of type. It offers links to forum threads where types were announced.  Event as a type dates from May 2001. The oldest are older than that, as the cache type was applied retroactively. This retroactive application of cache type (owners could do it back then)  makes working out "oldest" on early cache types a tad messy.
