Hi, I accidentally formatted my GPS, and then used a backup of files to put back in it, but some functions aren't working, would anyone have a list of the files that are suppose to be on this gps.

I only have the Dakota 10 which has fewer features and so probably slightly different software.

You might try re-installing the latest firmware and then performing a master reset to restore vital system files.

Caches arent showing, cant create new waypoints, I think it has to do with a corrupt or missing system file, this file has info about firmware and the device, SystemDevice.xml it is suppose to be generated each time unit is started up, to let unit know what is inside. seems to be like a registry,but mine isnt updating, with out it no updates are possible.

sounds like you're missing the file containing the program to create the xml file.

Garmin should provide a service for all who accidentally format the drive irespective of whether it is under warranty or you are the nth owner of the unit. I hear "I accidentally formatted my GPS" often enough to warrant doing so. There should be no cost and just be a download.

I have been talking to them several times, all they offered was for me to send unit back and pay at least $200 Canadian dollars for a refurbished one.

Just curious, how old is that backup? Have you updated the firmware on the device since you made that backup? If so, it could be that the updated firmware isn't properly recognizing the old files you're giving it.

A member of this forum sent me a copy from his dakota 20 earlier today, but still not working, i used an xml editor to change the unit id to be as same as mine, when it updates it says firmware is up to date,but i select to reinstall it anyway, the xml is not updating. I think that is where the problem lies.
