Can I make this an EarthCache?

Hi Folks! I have been looking for a spot locally for a EarthCache for this weekend's upcoming EarthCache day. I was told of and then went to see a US Dept of Interior Geological Survey marker located on a property(that has given permission for a cache)

I could easily toss a container nearby the Geological Survey marker. But I would like to make it a EarthCache.

I tried my best to search what the exact reason it was put there....with no luck. Anyone know of any sites to research a given survey marker?

Any input or info on how you could make this a earthcache would be greatly appreciated.

My other option is make is a puzzle cache that you need to take a picture of your GPS next to the marker. But would love to find a way to make it a Earthcache.

Thanks!

Earthcache Day is a week away, so I highly doubt you can get an earthcache published based on what you've posted.

I think you need to read the special Earthcache Guidelines:

http://support.Groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=51

And visit the earthcache.org site:

74VWbusFamily, you have come across a survey mark, sometimes called a "benchmark" around here.

The USGS, along with other agencies, set marks on prominent elevations but also along rivers, railroads, and major roads. The mark near you could be near something special, such as a high point in the area or an interesting geological structure (some in Hawaii are near volcanoes). But the mark could also be one in a string that traces a railroad or historical road.

In any case, your job would be to create a lesson about a geological feature or process, not about the survey mark itself. For example, I have found a USGS mark on the Minnesota side of the St. Croix River, which forms part of the boundary between Minnesota and Wisconsin. "The state line is over there" is not geology. The reason the river bends here might be. The explanation for the breadth or velocity of the river might be. A floodplain or watershed might be. Sometimes quirks in political boundaries are the result of misunderstood science--that can make for an interesting earthcache.

You can't require this, even as a puzzle cache. It's an ALR (Additional Logging Requirement) and is prohibited by the guidelines. You can't even require taking a picture for an earth cache. All requests for taking a photo must be optional.
