strohman65
I'm new to geocaching and I recently bought a Garmin Oregon 450. I just loaded some geocaches that are all within 2 miles of my house, but my Garmin didn't come with any real maps. I can see a very large overview of where each cache is located, but if I try to zoom in, I can't get anything. I had read that there were plenty of free maps available but I don't know where to go to get the best ones. Should I use the free maps? Which ones are the best? Quote Link to comment
+Chief301
For topographical maps, gpsfiledepot.com For routable street maps (driving directions), openstreetmap.org Both work great in my Oregon 550. Quote Link to comment
+The Leprechauns
I just yesterday downloaded a big custom map image file from openstreetmap for the states where I regularly go geocaching. The maps are saved on a Micro SD card inside my Garmin 62S, I can see "Routable Openstreetmap" as an option in the Map choice menu, and after selecting them I am seeing the map detail on my screen. The maps look great, but what are the steps to make the maps "routable"? I keep getting a "Routing Error" message when I select a geocache and choose auto navigation. Quote Link to comment
+ADKer
As, The Leprechauns said, I would recommend openstreetmap.org, Depending where you live, the maps are very accurate, able to rival Google or MapQuest. They have topo maps, as well as regular routable maps. Edited July 25, 2014 by ADKer Quote Link to comment
