We have just got a garmin dakota 10 and have downloaded the free map onto the computer, i have transfered the file in to the garmin file but it doesn't seem to be on the device, any help would be grateful

The "mapsource" version is for installing on the computer (and then transfer to the gps)

The img version can be copied in the Garmin folder of the gps or SD."

The dakota 10 is crippled because it lacks an µSD, therefore you have to limit the size of the map.

What does that actually mean??

 

In you case you should have a Garmin program called Basecamp and have the map visible in Basecamp, via another program called Mapinstall you select parts (tiles0 of the map and this program will compile the map and put in in the Gps.

Once in the Gps you activate the map so you can see it.

It's not important what map, if the file is big it just won't fit.

The Dakota 10 total free memory is 850Mb, today's maps tend to be large.
