Re-using an archived location

Hello fellow hiders. I am looking to use a spot, a nice park, at which a cache that had been there for years, has in recent weeks been packed up and archived. Do I need to wait for a certain period of time to pass before I can plant a hide at that location? Thx!

No waiting period. The location is all yours (as long as you claim it before anyone else).

 

You might want to create a preliminary cache listing page that includes the coordinates you desire. Save it, but don't enable it. This will "reserve" the location. Once everything is ready (including having hidden the cache), then enable it. Enabling it puts it in the reviewer queue.

Have the park rules changed? Did the original CO have permission?

If there are no new rules on placement and you receive permission to place in that spot, go for it.

Be aware that many caches get archived because the location is somehow now 'compromised' such that a cache won't last long there. Maybe not in this case but it frequently happens.

One more reason not to place a cache back in the exact same location. Goes right along with trying to give the cache seekers something new to find. Something different than what they found last time. It isn't easy, but worth the effort.

It would be cool to have a 'feature' on the webite that would show the archive log for any cache that existed previously within (for example) 40 feet of a proposed hide so that you could see if it was a good idea to place a new one there.

I've got a series called Recycled Ground Zero(RGZ) that I started a while ago. I have 4 or so in it. None of the hides are exactly as before. I find that many times when I hunt a cache, I either find a nearby spot on the way that I think is good, or I think I would have hid the cache in a different spot, so when a spot I like opens up, I reuse it, although not exactly. I also like the caching history of the old hide and CO, so I include any info I find interesting in that regard as well.

FWIW, it's not the same exact spot, it is in the same park. Thanks everyone! I spoke with the park directory and they have pretty solid guidelines on hiding geocaches. In fact, they require a permit to be filed, and they go out and inspect it. I like it.
