Your favorite ____ in the Atlanta area?

I'm fairly new to geocaching, but I've already started forming opinions on location, cache style and type of hide. Just wondering what some folks thought about these things. I suppose without going into too much spoiler-ific detail, I'd like to get some suggestions for good caches to go for in the Atlanta area.

 

What are your favorite:

1. Location - meaning geographic spot, be it of historic or scenic value...or just a cool corner of the ATL)

 

2. Cache style (size, container, contents) - While a micro container is easier to hide and makes for a good quick park 'n' grab, I'm always psyched to find the ammo box or tupperware-style container...they usually mean cooler stuff inside.

 

3. Type of hide - Okay...I admit, the first time I found a cache under a light pole 'skirt', I hadn't seen it before so I thought it was a cool way to hide something out in the open. But after the second or third one I sort of starting feeling like it was kind of a cop-out. Not only that, it usually means the cache is somewhere in or near a big parking lot, which in turn means a big shopping center or something that isn't all that interesting to visit. I don't mind a parking lot cache if the cache is disguised or camouflaged in some way and therefore more of a challenge - not only for the person searching for it, but also for the person hiding it because they have to be pretty creative about it.

 

Anyone got any particular caches you'd recommend going after? Something you had a tough time with but you felt a real sense of accomplishment from finding? Or maybe an easy find, but in a really cool spot that you never knew about...or visited all the time without realizing there was a cache under your nose the whole time? Maybe even one you have discovered was chock full of interesting stuff or the container itself was bizarre or interesting enough to make it noteworthy?

We really enjoyed Sweetwater Creek State Park the last time we were there.

 

Lots of trails, scenery, history, and a few good caches too.

Yeah...been there and I agree it's a cool place. I actually had the c:geo app on my old phone at the time because someone recommended it to me, but that phone had all sorts of connectivity issues, so I could never get it to locate me for longer than a few minutes, so I gave up. Next time I go back there I plan to hit those caches.

 

Personally, I think it's a shame that NPS doesn't allow geocaching. I haven't seen any caches yet that do damage or harm to the surroundings and they actually could be a draw for the geocachers out there on the hunt. I'm sure there have been all sorts of discussions about this, but having done a bunch of work for the park service over the last few years, I can think of dozens of great spots for caches. I suppose there's always Waymarking, but it just isn't the same...

I'm partial to Stone Mountain, as it's on my side of town when we're visiting my folks in Lilburn. Have only scratched the surface of that park. And we can go any time we want, since my folks always get yearly passes.

Check out the Georgia Geocachers Association website for caches the members have voted outstanding over the years - http://www.ggaonline.org/gga_awards.php. This does have caches all over Georgia but you should be able to find some in the Atlanta area.
