Enigma code setup

Recommended Posts

I want to make sure I'm doing this correctly before I code the coordinates.

Here's a "codebook":

From what I've read, the kenngruppen is the first two series of five letters in the message (two of the group of three for the day and two random letters added on to them).

Another way I've seen them coded is they would have AAA BBB at the top of the message. Then the user would set the rotors to AAA, type BBB, and get XYZ. XYZ would be the starting position of the rotors to decypher the message.

Is that the same way you use kenngruppen? I have a back story that includes a TB (a code book you have to go out and "steal") and the tracking number is what I assume to be used as a kenngruppen, in the manner of AAA BBB, to get XYZ.

Is that how the Enigma is supposed to work?

I have an Enigma Simulator and code book generator. I just want to set it up correctly, so that there's no problems when the local cachers go to decode it.

If I was'nt using the tracking number as the key, then I wouldn't have an issue because I could put the key into the code like ordinary syntax. I have to change the syntax slightly because I don't want to post the tracking number of the travel bug.
