HELP! Im loosing the will...

Recommended Posts

Im getting really frustrated!! I have been trying to download my first pocket query for a couple of days now. Ive been trying to read up on how to do it but nothing seems to be very clear as to how to do it or how it works. The first pocket query i did the other day doesnt seem to exist now? So ive done another one today, and i assumed that i needed to download some software (again nothing has said that i HAVE to do this?? So ive downloaded EasyGPS). I managed to click on the caches that i wanted from my pocket query and the download button, it then opened in easygps and i then downloaded this to my GPS. So far so good!?! The only problem now is that the descriptions arnt showing up on my GPS unit and neither are the hints? Help? I got the impression this was meant to be easy? What am i doing wrong?

Also, what happens when i mark caches found on my GPS, how does that information transfer onto my geocaching membership?

What GPS?

How many caches in the PQ, 500 or 1,000?

(It makes a difference on how you can download them!)

TIP.

When you set up the PQ, DON'T select 'Day To Run' then run the PQ.

If you get the caches you were expecting, click Edit and select Day To Run.

If not what you expected, edit the settings, until you do get what you expect.

Ive got a garmin dekota 20.

Im able to get the caches i want i just cant get them on the gps properly. I ran a query with just 96. I then selected just a few as a test.

Sounds like you're loading the loc file, rather than downloading the gpx file.

Do you get an email to say the PQ has been generated?

It should have a downloadable file.

Have you checked the second tab "Pocket Queries Ready to Download" on the PQ page?

http://www.geocaching.com/pocket/default.aspx

You should be able to download from there, too.

I'm not sure if that GPS is drag and drop for the file? -Checked!

Follow the Arrow!

*LOC files have virtually no information, the GPX file is worth its weight in Gold, in comparison!

Hook your Dakota up to your computer and copy the PQ files you downloaded to the X:\Garmin\GPX drive. The "X" being whatever drive letter is assigned to you GPSr. Then restart your GPSr and all of the caches in those files will be loaded onto your GPSr.

After marking caches found, hook your GPSr up to your computer again and this time go to http://www.geocaching.com/my/uploadfieldnotes.aspx Click on the Garmin tab half way down the page and it will give you step by step instructions on how to load the fieldnotes file and log your caches.

It says that there isnt any ready to download on the "Pocket Queries Ready to Download" tab.

I didnt get an email for the query i ran today but i did get one the other day, so ill check to see if i can download it from there.

How would i be able to get it to download the correct file?

Take a look at the Follow the Arrow link.

I'm not trying to cop out of answering, but I think it will all be explained there -with diagrams!

Start with a new PQ.

Check the "Uncheck the day of the week after the query runs" option. So you will still have the same PQ to run another time.

IF things don't work out, come back. :)

Yeah!! i managed to get it to download with description and hint!! Thanks!

Why would the PQ i requested today not send me an email? Or let me download it with the descriptions and hints?

When i have been out geocaching anf logged caches as found on my gps, how do i then transfer that info back to my membership page?

Click on the Garmin tab for instructions.

Did you select Day to Run? It's the usual mistake.

Field Notes: http://www.geocaching.com/my/fieldnotes.aspx

Specifically: http://www.geocaching.com/my/uploadfieldnotes.aspx

To upload Field Notes from your Garmin Colorado, Garmin Dakota or Garmin Oregon:

1. Plug your Garmin device into your computer with a USB cable.

2. Click "Browse" on this web page and go to the Garmin directory on your device’s drive.

3. Select the file named "geocache_visits.txt" and click "Upload" on this page to upload your Field Notes.

4. We recommend that you delete the "geocache_visits.txt" file on your device once your Field Notes have been successfully uploaded.

I find it best to delete the file "geocache_visits.txt" after logging.

The GPS will create a new one when needed.
