thelittmans
I'm a newbie and I bought the Garmin, I joined and paid for a Premium membership, I can't get the clues to my GPS? Any ideas??? Edited July 12, 2011 by thelittmans Quote Link to comment
CacheFreakTim
By clues I'm going to guess you mean the Geocaching hints. The easiest way to get those is create a Pocket Query. Once you have the .GPX file from the Pocket Query just drop it in the Garmin\GPX folder on your Dakota. Once you do that you will be able to see all of the paperless data on your Dakota. +charkol3
I have a dakota 20, and it works fine, hints, full descriptions, logs and all. I don't know how familiar you are with the menu, but first you have to be navigating to a specific goecache then you can find all the hints in the 'geocaches' menu button. It is a pain sometimes having to pop out of the map view into the main menu then into the Geocaches to read the helping hints, but it worked for me without any qualms. I wonder if the program I am using to transfer the info to the unit isn't getting it all? Quote Link to comment
ecanderson
I wonder if the program I am using to transfer the info to the unit isn't getting it all? Quite possible. What are you using? You can slide the *.gpx file from a PQ directly into the Garmin/GPX directory, too. Quote Link to comment

I get the caches loaded onto my garmin straight from the geocaching.com website. I'm not sure if it is advised that way or not, but I haven't ran into a problem. +SHards1014
So I just got the Dakota 20 today...I am able to upload the PQ zip file to Easy GPS then send all the info to the Dakota....but when I plug the Dakota into the computer, I just get an image with the GPSr connected to the computer and cant navigate through the menu of the GPSr...is this how it is for everybody? Or is there something I can do the change this? Thanks!! Quote Link to comment
CacheFreakTim
When you have the GPS plugged into the computer you cannot navigate the menus at the same time. You have to unplug the unit, or unmount it to be able to do that. Quote Link to comment
SHards1014
Hmm....when I first plugged the GPSr into the computer, the power indicator showed a "plug" icon instead of the "battery" icon. When I unplugged the unit from the computer, it began counting down from 30 until the unit would power off, or I could touch the screen to keep it on....now I cant do that......with my Etrex Vista, I was also able to navigate the menus while plugged into the computer and it also gave the countdown when disconnecting from the computer...... The eTrex units let you navigate the menus while it is plugged in. Many of the newer units don't for whatever reason. Quote Link to comment
mpilchfamily
The reason the newer units don't let you navigate while plugged in is they act as hard drives. Allowing you direct access to the file system on the unit. Thus allowing you to directly drag and drop .gpx and .loc files into the GPX folder rather then using an outside program like EasyGPS to load the info. If you want it to be plugged in while you play around with the unit you'll have to get a USB power adapter. If the unit sees it connected to a PC it will load itself like its an external hard drive or flash drive. If yo plug it into a USB Power adapter it will start to load like a drive but once it notices there is nothing on the communication lines it will go to the home screen. Quote Link to comment
SHards1014
Ok..thanks.....so when I get my PQ, the file is zipped, so to just drag the files and drop into the GPX folder, I need to unzip the file right? I have still been using EasyGPS to load the Dakota...but if I could eliminate that step, that would be great! Quote Link to comment
ecanderson
Yes, you'll need to unzip your PQ before placing the *.gpx files into your Garmin/GPX folder. Quote Link to comment
SHards1014
Ok...I guess I will just continue to use EasyGPS as it unzips the file for me....Thanks to all for the info! Quote Link to comment
mpilchfamily
All you should have to do is double click on the zip file then drag the 2 files in the zip package directly into the unit. There is no extra steps needed. Its actually quite simple. If the file doesn't open then download win-zip and your good to go. http://www.winzip.com/downwz.htm Edited July 18, 2011 by mpilchfamily Quote Link to comment
gnjeepn
I don't use any special program. I just download the zip file then unzip it. I then plug my Dakota in and open the gpx file on the Dakota and drag and drop the unzipped file. Done and it takes no time at all. No special programs needed. Quote Link to comment
SHards1014
ok....I will try that next time I load a PQ...thanks again! Quote Link to comment
