+Suttymonks Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Found a benchmark in May of 2011. It is marked "2202 Feet 2 DOP 1959". Please see picture. I have tried searching by Zipcode for Salamanca, NY -- 14779. The benchmark is NOT NC1032 / designation TOWNSEND HILL FIRE LOT -- which is marked 1935 OR NC1033 / TOWNSEND RESET -- there are three associated reference marks. Checked our photo against others uploaded for these and it does not match. Normally, we have no trouble finding and logging. Any help with the ID would be appreciated. Thanks -- Suttymonks Quote
TillaMurphs Posted July 8, 2011 Posted July 8, 2011 Hi Suttymonks, You found a US Geological Survey (USGS) mark. MANY of those are not in the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) database and are not in geocaching.com’s 10 year-old snapshot of the NGS database. A while back there was a thread that describes your situation. Here is what Z15 had to say at that time (just replace “HJH” in his reply with “DOP” and it will fit your mark perfectly) A great many of the USGS survey markers are not in any electronic database. They exist on paper in USGS archives. You would need to contact the USGS office serving your area and provide them with all the stamping (not cast into) on the mark, the state, general location i.e highway, location name, GPS or scaled coordinates are most important as that is how they are filed. They would not likely care about saving the mark but would update their records and provide you with information on the mark if so requested. Fyi - The "2" is the mark number in the series and the "HJH" would be the survey crew leaders initials, he was known as Chief of Party. Here is a link to that thread: Benchmark - Not able to ID Good Luck! Quote
