In this picture it looks a bit like GU3874 was attempting to jump to its death: Quote Link to comment
+DragonsWest
I'm going to assume if USGS had recovered the disc they would have put up a new Reference Mark in the vicinity - no sign of one. Quote Link to comment

kayakbird
May need another look- USGS is not mentioned in the DS. Photo in the first log is of a CGS Reference Mark that may or may not read 'CUT'. GU3874 The real CUT 2 RM 1 MONUMENTED by CADH may still be out there. Was there an original CGS CUT near here from some UNK (maybe 1927) date? kayakbird Quote Link to comment
+DragonsWest
Busy weekend for housecleaning, but managed to get out to locate about 20. Some were just sad sites to see. Amazed how many sites I'm finding which are defaced or destroyed. Did someone have it in for these things? HT1559 L 212 is clearly gone. Almost surgical how the top was removed. Have a look at the progression of pictures and logs for HT2276 Y 1320. First log is fine, next logs look like disk was attacked with an axe, then it's completely gone. Is it people looking for scrap metal, a collectible or are they paranoid and think the gummint is using these to spy on them? Quote Link to comment
TillaMurphs
... are they paranoid and think the gummint is using these to spy on them? You are close - but not quite. Foreign invaders use the marks to find their way to the Capital. That is why true patriots steal the disks and sell them on e-bay. Quote Link to comment
