Older devices such as printers (every printer has unique drivers to tell the PC how to use it) need updated drivers in order to run on a 64 bit OS. Thats mainly due to the changes MS made to the way drivers are handled in Vista/Win7. When AMD developed, what is now the standard 64 bit instruction set for PCs, x86-64 they made sure to keep things backwards compatible with all PC CPU instruction sets up to that point.
