camo idea

I've seen several approaches used in art-related caches, including:

  • art as a virtual waypoint for a multi-cache
  • blinkers and other nano-caches placed in plain sight on sculptures
  • caches hidden in the light fixtures that illuminate the art at night
  • caches hidden near the art, typically somewhere that provides a good view of the art

Those are good ideas. I was going to suggest the last one. I think that's what I prefer...still brings folks to see the object of interest, yet keeps the cache a safe distance from muggle traffic.

Generally, yes, but I think the problem is in this phrase "on or near but the grounds are very manicured ".

Unless you own the statue yourselves, I would suggest hiding the cache somewhere close by but not on the statue itself. Not all cachers are careful or "light-fingered" enough to search without damaging the artwork, and what seems obvious to you may not be to others.

If the statue has some sort of plaque or sign near it, you can use a number or letter found on the sign to have the cacher determine the final coordinates for the hide; in that case, you would list your cache as a multistage. Then you may be able to hide the cache container in a less "manicured" location near the statue, or in the park (if this is a park we're talking about).

We have a cool statue that we want to hide a cache on or near but the grounds are very manicured so we thought of some way of attaching it to the statue but not sure how. Any ideas or finds you have found on statues?? Thanks for your time.

I once found one where you had to walk to the monument, get a number "X" off the inscription, and project a new point 'n' feet at X degrees bearing. It led to a stand of pine trees where a nice lock-n-lock lay hidden under a pile of pine needles.

You can always make up a math question to force whatever digits might be on the statue inscription (or a letters to digits puzzle) and make it fit the particular environment.

By all means, DON'T hide anything on the statue ... or extremely close to it either.

Let me tell you of a bad experience that I regret to this day involving a tombstone, not a statue.

I was in an old graveyard. I was a very new cacher with NO experience in graveyard caches. I also assumed that the GPSr should point directly to the cache. I kept walking around, and the GPSr kept pointing to the tombstone. It was a three-foot tall obelisk atop a stone platform. I was SURE the cache was here, so I kept searching the tombstone up and down. That's when I accidentally leaned against it and sent it crashing to the ground!

Fortunately it did not break! But there it lay. Did you ever try to move an obelisk? It was so heavy that I found it impossible to move, let alone return it to it's stone platform. I was alone so there was nobody to help. And, it was in a location far from home, so I wouldn't be back in that area again. It's still there, as far as I know. I still feel bad about it.

Hiding something on a statue is just asking for trouble, in my opinion.

I hid a temp cache on a statue for an event once. It was in busy downtown Minneapolis. The statue was a full-sized bronze of a pioneer family. One of the figures had an outstretched hand, finger also pointing out. I hung a bison tube from that finger. I put it out the day before the event, and picked it up the day after the event. Three days in plain sight next to a busy city sidewalk.
