  1. I would grab a GPS track of the trail, upload the GPX file to geocaching.com as a route, and make a pocket query using the "Find Caches along a route" option. I used to do that all the time when I would cache along bike trails.
  2. A new one of these popped up in my area along a bike trail that I frequent. In addition to books and various trail maps/brochures, there was a large guest book with an attached pen. See, something like that could be listed as is. I wonder if people would be less likely to bother a guest book instead of some cache container that's hidden inside the box.
  3. I assume to increase revenue. The "classic" paid app was a one-time purchase. The "new" free app is really only useful with premium membership, i.e. ongoing annual purchase.
  4. Premium Member Caches Found1084 Didn't find it 06/20/2016 Saw where others had signed a stump; but a stump is not a log from a cache. Logging as a find when there is no cache is not right. Premium Member Caches Found2421 Found it 06/05/2016 Logged the stump the container seems to be missing Premium Member Caches Found1085 Found it 06/05/2016 Found where used to be signed stump to be funny. Tftc Premium Member Caches Found132 Found it 04/17/2016 Found where the cache used to be. Think cache is gone. Found a few remnants. (Remnants weren't from the cache) Member Caches Found18 Write note 04/16/2016 I think this one has fallen.
  5. I found one with a pair of underwear and a sharpie.
  6. Here's one I found last summer. http://www.geocaching.com/geocache/GC48MJE_g-aka-ginger It's a small dog house replica with a door containing a 50 cal ammo can inside. It's tucked in behind some bushes at the back of an old cemetery on Mackinac Island. It seemed like a nice tribute. Have dog toys as the trade items or whatever.
  7. Of the three night caches that I've found, I only did one at night. I did one during the day because it is placed without permission on a trail that is closed after dusk. There was a good enough hint, that combined with my familiarity with the trail, led me right to the cache without even seeing any reflectors. The other one I really did intend to do at night, but I never got around to it and then I found myself in the park with some extra time one afternoon. So I decided to go for it. I didn't use a light. If you look carefully enough, you can usually spot the white dots on the trees. I missed a couple, but after hiking around for a bit, eventually picked up the trail again. So that was a fun little experiment.
  8. A lot of these questions can be answered by stopping and simply asking yourself, "Did I actually find the cache?" No, you found half and your partner found half.
  9. The other night, I was bored and couldn't find anything to watch on Hulu, so I ended up watching this South Park episode where Randy buys a defunct Blockbuster and won't let Stan go trick or treating with the other guys because he thinks he needs help running the store. So they rig up an iPad on a skateboard and take him trick or treating on Facetime. Long story short, Stan ends up getting kidnapped and tortured by some criminal types and even ends up in the hospital, all through Facetime on the iPad. Haha. So now we have geocaching through Facetime, haha. I must admit, it sounds like a creative idea. Perhaps it's missing the point of geocaching, to some extent. I don't think I'd log a find in that manner, but as a cache owner, I don't think I'd delete a log either. I guess it might depend on the situation. But sounds like this hypothetical group is working as a team and having fun, so good for them, I guess. (On a side note, if I ever get into some serious accident or health issue that lays me up in a hospital for weeks or months, I hope I'd have a friend that was cool enough to Skype me in on a few caching adventures or events. But whether I'd log that as a find... we'll leave that judgement call for if/when I'm ever in that sitation.) So many things are situation-dependent. They seem all cut and dry until you start thinking about what-ifs.
  10. That's looking pretty good. Waterproof is a compound word.
  11. This past fall, the Army Corps of Engineers hosted a CITO event at a local park & also included an Intro to Geocaching portion, complete with loaner GPS units. On that day, one of my caches was stolen (the log book was left laying there with immature writings) and my other regular was completely emptied of swag. My multi-letterbox survived. The way I see it is USACE told noobs about my caches and they wrecked them. This year's CITO will find all of my caches with PMO designation for a few weeks. It's a great idea to have the class learn geocaching. But please consider placing a couple of your own caches to feature in the program (they can even be non-published caches if the students must stay on school grounds). This way, if you find that the kids mess things up, you can just cut your losses and archive them, rather than disturbing all the regulars. Consider listing your caches under an account created for the teacher so that she may share future logs with her students. The class could even launch a couple of travel bugs from them.
  12. I was dealing with this a couple of days ago. In June, I placed a big Lock&Lock full almost to the brim of toys and neat things. The first several logs talked about how the kids had so much fun trading toys. The other day, I was in the park placing a new cache and also checking on another cache. I found that one of my other ones was muggled (container stolen, but log book left) so I checked them all. When I got to the big cache, it had a keychain, pendant on a chain, and a quarter. Yep. Oh and a couple of little pieces of trash (a plastic cap to something and a prize sticker from a McDonalds cup). I'm still scratching my head on how the inventory devolved so quickly. Oh well.
  13. I let one sit for a year or so and it got archived to clear room for other caches (no new caches got published in the area...) Now that it is archived, it is no longer accessible because it was never published.
  14. I've run into this problem a time or two. When I lost my GPS and replaced it with an Oregon 500, it has a built in camera and I was using that for taking caching photos, but of course the GPS can't be in the photo. Now that I have an iPhone, I sometimes use it and have the same problem. Sometimes you can find a window or mirror. Then you might be able to get some of the location and a reflection of you and your phone/GPS/camera. Another one that might work is to use your shadow to project you and your phone/GPS/camera onto the location. But if the CO is going to email you to scold you about not being in the photo, they just might not like the shadow / reflection idea... But really the only reason they want to see the GPS is probably to know that you were there for caching and not pulling an old vacation photo or Google Image. So holding a trackable or one of my wooden nickels should be fine.
  15. I was thinking of suggesting that, but never made it back to the thread. Neat idea. Preserve the 'original' stash contents, but let it still function as an ongoing cache. I'd love to find it.
  16. Congrats! I remember 100. That was a big day. Hope you have lots of fun on future finds.
  17. Sounds like a neat idea and a good spot. I'd go for it. Around here, though, it seems that kids like to hang out on and under bridges. I guess it's fun to throw stuff off of bridges. Apparently under bridges by the abutments is a good unseen spot to drink beer and smoke pot. You see alot of grafiti on the sides of bridges and down below. I only mention this because if someone is just crossing the bridge, they probably won't see the cable or mess with it. But if kids with nothing to do are hanging out there, it's pretty much a given that they will find it, toss the stuff off the bridge, and then draw nasty things in the log book Good idea, though.
  18. There is a hundred-cache series along a bike trail in Michigan that I did a year or so back. (To save time and sanity, I only hit about half of them.) Many, if not most, of the containers were these little paint containers. There were also a few film cans and what-not thrown in. I'd say every single log was wet. Many were just mush. On several of them I didn't even pull the log out; I just drew an 'x' on the top of the log/mush/wad laying in the container. I use a gel pen, so that worked. From experience, I'd say these containers are a bad idea.
  19. I spotted this in the PDF that was linked: I'm guessing that's the plane in the woods that houses the cache. Sounds like they plan on removing it at some point during development. Bummer.
  20. Here are some 4mil bags on Amazon, all different sizes. You can get 500 for 10 bucks and if you're Prime, free shipping. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=zip+lock+4mil Sounds like a neat idea. You can print little labels for each bag, maybe even with a picture of the plant-to-be.
  21. That is pretty sweet! That's why I'm thinking if you have to disable until the park is built or whatever, be sure to post updates often so it doesn't end up getting archived!
  22. Yep. Is the park close to be finished? You could disable until it is built or at least post warnings on the cache page about the situation. edit: typo
  23. If the old airport is now owned by the township, isn't it now the township's parking lot? I'm missing what the airport owner has to do with it, unless he parceled out the land and kept the parking lot. If it's the township that doesn't want people parking there, then perhaps the cache placement needs to be re-evaluated. Maybe you can check with the township supervisors. If they own the land, they should be able to provide guidance on right-of-way and parking issues.
  24. Wait, I'm confused. Is that possible? Haha, anyway, I got three cases of LnLs a few times ago that woot had them. Gave one box to my mom. So I still have two boxes of 'em. That's a lot of caches. (Or maybe I'll use some for food too
