garmin etrex help

Hi & welcome to Geocaching :D

If I remember correctly the basic Garmin "yellow" Etrex uses a serial cable to connect to computer.. getting a cable might be a problem, and it could be a bit costly.

Also, check your computer most modern computers don't even have a serial connector anymore (it looks like a VGA video connection except it's a "mirror image" pins instead of holes)

You could try getting a cable & fiddling with one of those serial-to-USB interfaces but they can be tricky to get working properly.

Personally I'd suggest you just enter in the coordinates manually. I found my first ~100 caches doing just that. Yes it's a pain (avoid typos!!) but it does work.

Mad fifers,

If you have or know someone who has some experience with soldering you could just call this guy http://pfranc.com/projects/g45contr/g45_idx.htm

Hooked one of his "flat one" connectors to the end of an old serial mouse cord. Works like a charm on my old eTrex Legend. He makes these things in his home shop. You call, he gets your mailing address and few days later they're in the mailbox. If you feel quilty enough for receiving the plugs, you can releave the guilt by sending him $10. :yikes:

Plus the guy who makes these things is a real charactor. On Youtube, look up "larrycanfly" videos to see what I mean.

Hi all, we are new to geocaching and we have just managed to get our first gps ( basic etrex yellow one ) and were wondering what cables etc we need to get to download gps coordinates etc onto it.

Hi,

I picked up one on ebay for $15 including shipping. It is USB and works great
