+Flairness
I'll be going on a cruise at the end of October and want to get some geocaches in each port, but I'm trying to hammer out how I'm going to accomplish that without a traditional GPSr. I use my Droid for geocaching currently, but I'm not sure about these questions: First, does the GPS work when in airplane mode? I've tried to test it myself but have gotten inconclusive results. Second, while I can manually type in the coordinates into a compass app, most compass apps use Google Maps for the display (not sure if Google Maps is integral to GPS or not..). Is there any way to store maps offline so that the compass uses them and doesn't time out with an error of not retrieving data? Any other suggestions on how to make this work would be wonderful. Thanks so much! Quote Link to comment
+Flairness
Actually, through some research on the Cruise Critic website, I found that Verizon has a "global solutions" package for $64.99 a month, and they will pro-rate it. So I will have unlimited internet in any country that has CDMA technology for about $11 for my cruise. No more worrying about how I am going to pull up google maps! If you ever encounter this, all you have to do is call Verizon and ask for an International Specialist, or if the Customer Service Agent is knowledgeable enough, tell them you want the GlobalEmail / Global Solutions package, and let them know the dates that you'll need it. +Afterburned
Get an App (I use cachemate on 'droid) and pre-load all the caches in the area you are going to. Get there, centre your app and look for the nearest. Simples Quote Link to comment
+Afterburned
Oh, and the GPS does not work in airoplane mode, but you can turn the mobile off and GPS on. I know this is no longer an issue but for others it may help. Quote Link to comment
