2oldfarts (the rockhounders)
We found a Geodetic survey marker but cannot find it in the system. It is identified as J 405 -+- 1962. It is at 37deg. 00.017 min.N. and 111deg. 34.312 min. W. Entering the coordinates produced no listing. How does one go about getting the PID for an unknown marker. Thank you for any help offered. 1 of 2oldfarts Quote Link to comment
survey tech
J 405 is a legitimate benchmark in Coconino County, which has a huge number of vertical control points listed in the NGS database. Its easy to look it up by designation, which shows that the PID is HN0668. Unfortunately, no data is listed for it. Some data is inevitably misplaced in such a massive system. Quote Link to comment

Z15
We found a line of USC&GS Bench Marks in the Hiawatha National Forest (Michigan) that are not published anywhere. They were set in 1948, are USC & GS Bench Marks disks in round concrete posts. After much (months) calling and asking different sources, the USFS Surveyor found old records of the field notes in their files, with all the data and the preliminary elevations. There was a report that stated that this line of levels some 20 miles long (20+ BM's) did not close on the other marks at the North and South ends of the line. Normally they start at 2 or 3 know marks and close on 2 or 3 other know marks. The quality of the work did not meet specs and they never had time or money to re-level the line, apparently. If it was not for the USFS having these old records, we would not have found the data because NGS could not locate it for us. Quote Link to comment
