A lot of times in this buisness,we do a great job of "jargoning" ourselves into poor communications. For example we might assume you know the diffrence between GPS and GIS.They may sound the same, but they are two very diffrent concepts.

Global Positioning system---or GPS--- is simply that set of satellites orbiting the earth that help you get a fix on a location or map out a field boundry. It's the STARTING point for your maps and the Initialbase layer for your Geographic Information System(GIS).

Geographic Informmation System---GIS---is a series of information layers linked by location(using GPS) that can be used to manage a specific area. While in Agriculture we focus mainly on yeild maps and the information there,GIS is being used for everything from managing telephone wiring in specific areas to mapping out natural areas and connecting sensitive environmental information for better managment.GIS is the key process of turning a bunch of data into useful knowledge.

GIS would be a great backdrop for this site. You would know if the cache is within 150' of a RR, or if it's within a park with clear container requirments.

Is not the NGS a GIS?

Are we suppose to volunteer all our GIS to the NGS,that is all these benchmarks that we are all recovering and updating.

Or could this be a future way (GIS)to log all benchmarks found as well as other bona fide landed corners of the PLSS in a Geocaching Data base.

I am in no way trying to discourage our posting to the NGS.

But making known the knowledge that most of us Benchmark hunters have,if it were easy everyone would be doing it.

And correct me if I am wrong but Surveyors get paid to recover these marks,a very sizeable amount for each one.

But in the search after several hundred it tends to get expensive especially the farther out you get from your base net.

GIS doesn't necessarily have to based on GPS locations. GPS is simply one of many tools available.

Cheers, Kerry.
