How to read “notes” that you have left against a found geocache on the Oregon 450

Recommended Posts

Hi fellow Oregon owners

After I have logged a geocache as found on my lovely new 450, it gives me the option to enter notes. This is great as I like to make a note of things I might want to put in my online log later (which trinkets the kids took and left, whether we picked up or deposited a travel bug etc). I used to have to cart a pad and pen around for this purpose, but putting it straight into the GPS as I walk on to the next cache or back to the car is easier.

All well and good. But try as I might, I can’t work out how to go back and see those notes again when I get home, which kind of renders them fairly pointless :)

I’ve looked in the manual that came installed on the unit, but it doesn’t seem to cover the geocaching function in any detail.

I’m hoping one of you guys or girls has already cracked it, and can help me out.

thanks in advance - Sarah of the Chaos Crew

I have an Oregon 550t but assume they are very similar. When you plug your GPS into the computer click on 'Garmin Oregon (G:)' (the one next to the blue triangle) and select 'Garmin'. Then select 'geocache visits' which takes you into Notepad. This should list all of the notes that you posted in the field. Here you can delete all of the caches that you have found and made notes on.

I hope this has helped. It took me a while to work this out as the manuals are not very clear.

oh! so you can't actually read them on the unit? how odd.

I never would have worked that out for myself, thanks for the advice B) I'll try it when I get home from work, as I don't have my cable at work with me, just the GPSr itself

When you upload your field notes onto GC.com the notes that you entered will be displayed in the log box for the cache. In theory you can write your whole log on the Oregon then upload the field notes to GC.com and that will save you time. If you do this the file on the GPS will get big so delete it every now and then, the GPS will simply create a new document next time you tell it you have visited or tried for a cache.

I had no idea I could upload from the unit to the website....I wish the manual wasn't so vague - it definitely doesn't say anything about "field notes"

is there better documentation online for the Oregon that might explain stuff like that to me?

I'm sure the unit can do all sorts of clever things I don't know about.....

I struggled with this same issue when I first got my Oregon 400t. I quickly found that uploading to Geocaching.com was the easiest way to view my notes but am still frustrated that I can't view them on the unit.

I've been known to edit the geocaching_visits.txt file before uploading to streamline the logging process. It is after all a fairly simple txt file.

I still wish there was a more refined support of the Geocaching functions on the Oregon. I wish there was a landscape view mode when in automotive navigation mode too - oh and a qwerty keyboard in landscape display too :)

Oh - how I wish I was a programmer/hacker :P
