brickette Posted December 25, 2009 Posted December 25, 2009 I have been searching for a GPS for caching (only) and I am not sure my husband bought the right one? We just bought a Garmin nuvi 270, and while it says it can be used for paperless caching, it seems that there is mixed information in the forums. Some say yes, some say no.....I am confused. Please someone help before I open this one! Quote
+tonya c Posted December 26, 2009 Posted December 26, 2009 Where are you finding information that says it can be used for paperless geocaching? Quote
+jbar Posted December 26, 2009 Posted December 26, 2009 Welcome to the obsession. People do use Nuvi's for caching but they are not the ideal device. They are car gps, not realy suited for field use. They are not water proof, fragil, and have poor battery life. They are great to get you to a parking lot, but you need to be careful with them out of the car. A hand held unit is much better suited for geocaching. There are a lot of device to pick from, Garmin etrax, Oregon, or Dakota, Delorme pn-20, pn-30 or pn-40. Quote
+Nature Kids Posted December 26, 2009 Posted December 26, 2009 (edited) Your Garmin nuvi 270 will work fine, unless you'll be caching in rain storms, or hiking for miles. We've found all our caches with a Nuvi & we are happy as clams. Check out True Paperless Geocaching Edited December 26, 2009 by Nature Kids Quote
brickette Posted December 27, 2009 Author Posted December 27, 2009 Being waterproof and battery life could be issues here in Hawaii. I think mabye I will go with something a little more durable and less for driving directions. Thanks All !!!! Quote
brickette Posted December 27, 2009 Author Posted December 27, 2009 Where are you finding information that says it can be used for paperless geocaching? From what my husband says when you look up the actual device on the internet to find information, it says it can be used for geocaching? Haven't checked it myself however, I have looked at other "driving GPs's" and they also say they can be used for geoching, eccept many people here say no? I've made up my mind anyway, I need something especially for caching...not driving! Quote
+tonya c Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 (edited) You cannot use it for paperless geocaching without going through lots of bs. I have a Oregon 400t, Nuvi 550 and a GPSmap 60csx. The Nuvi 500 series have a paperless geocaching feature from the factory. That part works good. The only thing I didn't like about it was the lack of a compass pointer. I use the compass pointer function on my Oregon and 60csx exclusively once I get within 500 feet or so of the cache. The 500 series doesn't have that feature. There are other brands and models. I've used Garmin products for the last 10 years so i'll stick with what I know best. Costco.com still has the Oregon 400t on sale for $329. Money well spent. I took the Nuvi 500 out again today and after 20 minutes of messing with it I finally figured out how to use the compass pointer. It's there and it works pretty good. Just took more steps to get to it than I realized. Not explained anywhere in the manual. Edited December 28, 2009 by tonya c Quote
