  1. Did you look at the satelite page to see what the signal strength was like?
  2. I loaded the maps from gpsfiledepot onto my 60csx and am very pleased with them. Compared to what was on my Etrex Legend these are very good and up to date.
  3. Once I got the premium membership I kicked myself when I realized there were tons of caches that I walked by whose locations are only known to premium members
  4. yes but they are suppose to go in the geocahing file too. On the other one I have you can see them in the waypoints and the geocaching file. There is no "file". Geocaching are identified by the icon you've assigned to them. If the icon matches what you've set up on the unit's geocaching mode page, then they're considered geocaches. The default in the unit is the closed/opened treasure chests for unfound/found caches, but you can set them to any icon that you can assign to a waypoint, including any of the 24 custom icons. Actually your are wrong about this in regards to the 60csx. When you press the find button it will bring up a menu screen and one of the buttons you can scroll to is "geocaches". So if your down loading gpx files individually straight from geocache.com it will send them straight to the geocache file in the 60csx. Prime suspect is right, reread his post ! You can change the icon however the "geocache" file still exits under the "find" menu.

  6. I use the free maps from gpsfiledepot.com. I have the 60csx and they work great in it.
  7. --> QUOTE(brian b @ Jan 2 2010, 04:58 PM) 4176682[/snapback] Thank you all for you advice. I currently use a 60csx for my handheld, on the trail geocaching. But I want a car gps that will function as both an aid to caching as well as an aid to getting to a location. (MY 60 has all topo maps; otherwise, I would use that as a driving companion.) Most of my questions were answered here. Now I just need to know if the wife will explode if I shell out the money for ANOTHER gps!!! I am using the 60csx and the Nuvi 550. I think it's an excellent combination. It took a little while to figure out the 550 to transition from using it in the car to using it on foot looking for the caches. But now that i've solved that I like it.
  8. I don't think you can display both like you want to do.
  9. Why can't you view the logs? I can view the most current ones on mine.
  10. $329 new at Costco.com if you already have a membership.
  11. Check Amazon. You can get a Garmin Oregon 200 for just $239. Of course prices fluctuate on Amazon so check often.
  12. Your actually wrong about this. Garmin makes the NUVI 500/550 that does both track and trail. It's waterproof and works fine outside. It has all the Nuvi features so it does a good job on the road. I bought mine from Amazon.com 3 weeks ago for $199. I noticed there price does fluctuate a bit. But I haven't seen it priced over $225. This is a good looking unit but given its sleek appearance I wonder how well it will fare outdoors. More importantly, given its form factor i.e. its shape, it would seem not practical to hold in your hand for any length of time while you navigate on foot over rough terrain, tree stumps, etc while searching for a hide. Dakboy is right, you are better off with a dedicated unit for each purpose. I've had great success for on-road navigation using my TomTom One 3rd ed. I picked it up refurbished for around $100 almost two years ago. I hear the entry level TomTom units are even cheaper now when you buy them refurbished. I can recommend them highly. I think if you save up just a little more cash you can have your cake and eat it too. A solid unit for the car and another for your hobby. I have Nuvi 255T, Nuvi 550, 60csx and an Oregon 400t. I'm impressed with this Nuvi 550. It's a rugged unit. You can tell once you hold it in your hand. It's thicker and heavier than my 255T. It's defintely a different feel then the Oregon and 60csx. For someone that is looking for both a street and trail GPS I'd sure give this one a second look. Don't discount it until you've seen it and used it.

  14. I have a 60csx so my comments are directed towards it however they may be useful for GPSmap 60 users. Download the caches straight to the gps using the gpx files on geocache.com. Then once you turn the unit on and your sure it's locked on the satellites press the button that says "FIND", you'll have a number of different options on that page and one of them is geocaches. Scroll over to GEOCACHES and press enter. Your cache info should be there.
  15. It's easier for you to go back into Norway since your a citizen there. If I, a US Citizen, fly into Norway I have to go through the same process to get into your country that you did. Fingerprints, eye scan, DNA swab and possibly a prostrate exam. Do you think they should relax security standards and just let the terrorists blow up planes instead??? If they ask me to turn off my GPS I won't have a problem doing it.
  16. I don't know about the GSAK files as all I download are the GPX files straight from geocache.com. I'm sure you could download straight from GSAK. I think it holds 500 files.
  17. If your talking about the Nuvi 500 it has full voice prompts.
  18. Page over to the compass page and your "found, note, stop" buttons will be at the bottom of the page.
  19. I've got one of those as well. Make sure you calibrate the compass. The directions are in the manual. It helped my accuracy a bit. You've got an awesome gps. Free maps from gpsfiledepot.com. They worked fine with my 60csx and they were free!!
  20. You cannot use it for paperless geocaching without going through lots of bs. I have a Oregon 400t, Nuvi 550 and a GPSmap 60csx. The Nuvi 500 series have a paperless geocaching feature from the factory. That part works good. The only thing I didn't like about it was the lack of a compass pointer. I use the compass pointer function on my Oregon and 60csx exclusively once I get within 500 feet or so of the cache. The 500 series doesn't have that feature. There are other brands and models. I've used Garmin products for the last 10 years so i'll stick with what I know best. Costco.com still has the Oregon 400t on sale for $329. Money well spent. I took the Nuvi 500 out again today and after 20 minutes of messing with it I finally figured out how to use the compass pointer. It's there and it works pretty good. Just took more steps to get to it than I realized. Not explained anywhere in the manual.
  21. Where are you finding information that says it can be used for paperless geocaching?
  22. You are right, the 60 series from Garmin doesn't support paperless geocaching. You need one of the Oregon or Colorado models. Or you get an additional PDA to do all the "paperwork" there. With the GPS 60 maybe the POI workaround could help. There the description of a geocache is put into several POI, so you have the information, but that's not very convenient. GermanSailor Garmin also makes the NUVI 500/550 which have paperless geocaching. I'm really impressed with them. You can use them for in-car gps and for geocaching. Price is very reasonable. I got one and it'll probably become my main geocache unit.
  23. honestly, I don't know if I can download it through usb. The manual is no help. I did figure out how to enter it manually. I'm really considering returning this unit. Just slow down and take the time to read the owners manual. You can down load the caches via the usb straight from the geocache.com website. Forget about using the Garmin site. The manual is very self explanatory if you'll just take the time to read it. You've got a good GPS. http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/GPS60_OwnersManual.pdf
