+TheBeanTeam
I WAS IN KENTUCKY LAST WEEK AND CAME ACROSS SEVERAL OF THESE LOOK ALIKE BENCHMARKS. DO THEY COUNT AS BENCHMARKS? Without more information about the marks you are referring to it is impossible to assist you. Location? Photos? There are many benchmarks in the US that are not in the Geocaching database. It is possible they are indeed benchmarks but even more likely they are not listed here. This post in the "read me first" thread in the neighboring Benchmark Hunting forum may also give you insight into your find. Quote Link to comment
ProLandSurveyor
Yes and No. Yes they are most likely a type of benchmark that controls a horizontal or vertical datum but their location and relationship to said datum may or may not be publicly published. They may have been set for a local project and don't have any ties to a national reference frame but then again they could be tied and published somewhere. There are thousands of benchmarks out there that are not in the NGS database that have been set by local municipalities, Department of transportation’s and or private surveyors and they are quite relevant to today’s reference networks. Most likely, you would need to check with your local USACE office for a published value. Quote Link to comment
