shsesc
HI, I'm new to this site and to GPS technology. I have a Magellan Triton 400 and I've read about all these free maps on the internet, but I can't find them. Where can I find better maps for New England, specifically CT. How much would TOPO! cost and is it any good for roads as well as trails? I tried searching this site and couldn't find much. Thanks for any help you can give me. Quote Link to comment

+gpsblake
You can improve the basemap somewhat by using the old basemap from the Explorist series which is much better than the Triton one. http://www.tritonforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=300 Make sure you download the map on your SD card and not directly to the unit. Other than that, the short answer is no, you can't really get free maps. Quote Link to comment
+miniwhip
Some rather crafty individuals have developed software to make .RMP maps for the Tritons. You can read more about it in this thread Quote Link to comment

Chuck E. Mong
It's kind of an old posting but a Google search for Triton 400 Topo Explorer led me here. I fell for a Triton package that included National Geographic's Topo Explorer software and "25 free map credits" only to find out after installing the software that the site no longer exists and isn't supported anymore. Nat Geo is supposed to be partnering with alltrails.com but I don't think they have anything available yet. The GPS is pretty nice but the base maps are pretty lame. The whole package was marked down at Walmart for $45. from $179. Oh, well. Live & Learn. You get what you pay for and sometimes you don't. Edited June 5, 2013 by Chuck E. Mong Quote Link to comment
