eTrex Legend (Blue) gasket

Garmin was kind enough to send me a replacement for the rubber gasket that goes around the exterior of the Legend. They didn't include any directions for putting it on. Does anyone know what type of glue / adhesive I should use for this piece?

It uses a double sided tape. I thought that came with the repair kit.

Nope, it's just a rubber gasket in a plastic bag. No adhesive, instructions, etc.

The original one was held on with a glue. The problem was when it would heat up (summer use), the gasket would slide off the GPS and make a sticky mess.

I appreciate Garmin sending a new gasket, but I'd like to prevent the same problem from happening to this piece too.

The original was also held on by double-sided clear tape. The gooey glue you saw was from the tape. Trust me, I've been there with my Legend. I had it repaired under warranty and it just came loose again in six months. Now it is my backup and I just have the rubber gasket in place with no adhesive. It probably is no longer waterproof. I would suggest giving Garmin a call and ask about the tape/adhesive.

Best thing I have found to hold it on is stuff called Badge Magic. It is made for attaching patches to uniforms but works wonders on all kinds of other stuff. Mine has held the "rubber band" on for over a year with no slipping or lifting despite the band having tore through in one spot.

You can find Badge Magic at BadgeMagic.com or at many places where Boy Scout uniforms are sold.

Okay, I've got some Badge Magic here, and have a few questions before proceeding.

  • The gasket on my Vixta C is loose in several spots, and still attached in other spots. Should I remove it completely before re-attaching it with the Badge Magic, or should I leave it partially attached and just put some small strips of the stuff in the loose places?
  • Did you remove the old adhesive, or just put the Badge Magic right over it? If I need to remove it, is something like "Goo Gone" good, or should I use something else?
  • Which is better, applying the Badge Magic to the gasket and then pressing the gasket into the unit, or applying the Badge Magic to the unit, and then pressing the gasket on?
  • Is this a one-shot deal, that I have to get exactly right on the first try? Or if it's not exactly lined up, will I be able to move it around a bit to adjust it?
  • The instructions for using Badge Magic to put Scout patches on uniforms include ironing after attaching. Obviously I'm not going to iron my GPS  , but do I need to do anything heat-wise to get it to set, like maybe use a hair dryer or something?

Any other tips you can think of will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Perfect. So glad we searched here. Our Venture E trex is all sticky and loose also. We contacted Garmin and are waiting for a response but might try removing the gasket, cleaning off the glue then going over it with alcohol and putting in the freezer overnight (cold should shrink it back to original size) then re-attach using this badge magic.
