cedarfluteman Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 In the Gps there is a setting for true north or magnetic north. Which is the one I should choose or does it matter much? Thanks Quote
+Trucker Lee Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 There is in a Garmin, don't know about the others. Doesn't matter, your choice. Quote
Alphawolf Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 If you are using your GPS along with a compass, then use mag. north, as that is the "language" that a compass "speaks". Otherwise, use T north (such as with maps). Quote
+BlueDeuce Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 It depends on which one you are trying to find. If for the most part you only read basic road maps set it to True. Quote
+Team_CSG Posted July 18, 2007 Posted July 18, 2007 If you are using a GPS with map and compass, (We do this quite often in Boy Scouting) the difference can be significant (declination) depending on where in the world you are. See the link below for a good explainiation. http://gorp.away.com/gorp/activity/hiking/...ation/north.htm Quote
+The Jester Posted July 19, 2007 Posted July 19, 2007 If you are using your GPS along with a compass, then use mag. north, as that is the "language" that a compass "speaks". Otherwise, use T north (such as with maps). Or buy a compass that has declination offset. I use True north as the north arrow then lines up with most road grids. Interesting historical note: Seattle was plotted by three different men (north, south, central) who could not agree which to use. So each picked their favorite and that's why the downtown core streets don't match well with the rest of the city. Quote
