Placing a cache in a state park

It varies by state. Start with the administration of the particular park in which you want to place the cache. Your starting point may be the local ranger, who can refer you to their boss, and so on.

I have seen that hiders sometimes print out material explaining geocaching to help educate the park administration on geocaching and its benefits to the park (primarily, increased utilization by well-mannered, environmentally-aware people).

It all depends on the state park. Some have permit policies, some ban them and some have no policy. If you google your state park's name you will probably find a contact number where you can call and ask.

You can also go to the web site of your state's DNR or Dept. of Conservation or whatevber they call themselves. The Illinois one states their geocaching policies and requirements. The site also lists contact numbers for all of the state parks and recreation areas.

We have a cache in a state park area. What we did was ask another cache owner who has a cache near where we wanted to place our cache. They gave us a contact name. Eventually we contacted him via email with our request and a google map graphic of our proposed area.

About a day or two later an email was received with permission to place the cache. No permit necessary in our area. I did make the cache description say to not look for the cache if you aren't going to CITO. (I figure it is the least any cacher can do when they find a cache that is on someone elses property.)

You can also try asking in the local forum (the Midwest for you) or on the boards for your nearest geocaching groups if there is one near you.
