+Makrjohn Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 I have a question that I am hoping all of you can help me answer. While I don't think that there is anything to prohibit what I want to do, I wanted to be sure. Last night my daughters and I were talking about our geocaching adventures and the travel bugs that we have to move on. Well, Riley (my 7 year old) came up with an idea of releasing some of our own -- some for fun, and some for a cause. With those for a cause, she wants to donate a penny for every mile that it moves in a month, so if it moves 1,000 miles, we would donate 10.00 to the respective charity. She even offered up some of her allowance if it would help. I agreed and added that we should do more than just one though -- that we should pick several charities and potentially do one each month for a different cause. So could it get expensive? Yea I guess, but tracking the bug each month teaches geography and writing that check each month promotes giving, so I am all for it. So, before I say "yea, lets do it" I wanted to get some feedback from all of you to make sure that I haven't "bought into the passion" and ran wild with this idea and at the same time wouldn't be breaking any caching rules. Your thoughts? Quote
+BlueDeuce Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 I think it sounds fun. It does't break any rules I am aware of. Although moving 1k miles in a month will probably be more the exception than the rule. Quote

I sort of thought about that too and will feel a little silly for writing small checks, but besides being fun, I think that it will help instill upon my daughters a sense of giving. Thanks for your feedback. Mark Quote
+BlueDeuce Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 but besides being fun, I think that it will help instill upon my daughters a sense of giving. Absolutely. Maybe you could find a couple charities that take cash donations to help make the giving more tangible. Like save up for the MS telethon this Labor Day and then go to a donation site and pour it in. Happy Caching! Quote
+Mad Fiddler Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 Your daughter, at the tender age of 7, is already showing more kindness and concern for others than a lot of adults do. Congratulations on raising such a great kid! Quote
Neos2 Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 Neat idea, I love it--but I do have one teensy little thing to suggest. While there are exceptions, most TBs don't really move great distances every month. I have three TBs out with my classes, they are averaging about 1000 miles a year. I have one TB that has only gone 85 miles in 6 months. The rest of our TBs are more like the second example than the first, but even the school ones would only rack up $0.83 a month debt for you. I know you said you didn't mind writing a lot of small checks, but think of it from the charitable organizations point of view also. They will have to process those donations, which takes manpower if not expense. It's not that they won't still appreciate the donation, but it might not be the best use of their resources. You'd feel better if you were sending at least $5 or so at a time. You might discuss with your daughter the possibility of rethinking your time scale (pay quarterly), your pledge amount, or perhaps have a monthly minimum of at least a dollar per charity? Of course, you realize that (now that I've said this) as soon as you put one out, someone will pick it up and start taking it around the world in hops of 2000 miles at a whack! Quote
+Eartha Posted July 4, 2007 Posted July 4, 2007 If you, yourself will be doing the donating, I think it's a wonderful idea, and you have a great daughter. If you were asking others to donate, it wouldn't fit the guidelines for a cache, but TBs do not go through a review process. As far as what if it only goes a few miles a year, then maybe you could set a minimum for your monthly donation. Miles or $5-10 minimum/month. Quote

+Huntcliff Posted July 13, 2007 Posted July 13, 2007 Also - some not so noble person could think it is funny and after getting a hold of the bug, they could dip it into caches all over the world racking hundreds of thousands of miles and a huge bill for you. You may want to state that the mileage is counted as theTB changes hands, not as it changes caches. Quote
