Vista CX question

I have the Topo map in my unit and I like to look around at different area's of PA to hike and when I find an area that I want to save as a waypoint for future reference to show a friend, I need to know how to save it. I am looking while the signal reception is turned off and when I hold down the stick to mark the waypoint it ends up with the last rception coordinate's that the GPS had in it, another words my home coordinate's.

Right now I end up writing down the coordinate's that are shown at the top of my map while I am looking around, which are the correct coordinate's for the pointer and then editing the saved one's that are wrong and I also edit the name and icon.

Can anyone help me with an easier way to do this?

Thanks,

Jeff

Very peculiar; both my Vista and Venture Cx will mark a location when I mark it in panning mode. The Cx informs me there is no map information at a given point and asks if I want to create a user waypoint. And it does. With the Cx I simply move the cursor to activate panning mode; in the Vista I have to click a submenu; but bot get it done. I don't use Topo; so, that may have something to do with it.

I have the same unit and its working as expected. I get new location with gps on or off, whether there is map data or not.

You are using a Garmin topo map?

does it work for you when gps is on?

It's a lot easier to do in MapSource on your PC. you get a bigger screen to work with, you can plot a route between waypoints on the hike, and as I'm sure you know, you can download the waypoints and route to your GPSr when you are done.

I just turned off GPS reception on my 60cx and vista CX and they both behave this way(strange if you ask me).

I would consider this a bug, even though I have GPS signal turned off I am panning the map to a certain location and the map is showing the new coordinates at top of page. as soon as you hit mark, the coordinates change back to the last know location.

Obviously I know were I want to mark the waypoint even though satellite reception is turned off.

Playing with this a bit more I did find out what I was doing wrong on my 60cx. If you pan map and hit the mark button it is marking the last known loaction, but if you pan map and hit enter it will ask you if you want to create a user waypoint in the new loaction.

panning and marking a waypoint on my vista CX it's a pretty similar to the 60cx, instead of panning map and then holding the click-stick to mark a new waypoint, just pan the map and just click the click-stick to mark a new waypoint in that spot.

Also note: This issue effects the unit if gps reception is off or On, so when panning the map there is a proper way to mark waypoints..... which I never realized before.

You got it Hogrod,

That's exactly what happens to me, the GPS even while sat recept. is turned off... it knows where on the map it is but yet it will not give me that exact waypoint when I mark it.

Thanks Hogrod!!

glad it worked the "proper way" for you, though it seems garmin should make it work either way you do it. Even a simple pop up message that asked mark waypoint at current position, or cursor position would work great.

If you read the whole thread, you'll see that Garmin has already made it to work. You can do whichever you want, depending upon if you use Mark or Enter (equivalent to hold or just press qucikly).

It's just a question about learning how your unit works.

Interesting. I never really noticed the distinction between Mark and Enter. I was always able to create a waypoint one way or another, but this explains behavior I have been ignoring
