+imajeep Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 I've started recording the tracklogs from my hikes in GPX files, and recently, I've started creating Google Earth KMZ files, which combine a tracklog, waypoints, and geotagged photos into a single file. It's a great record of a hike! So, there ought to be a place where I can upload these files, and download other people's tracklogs for a hike I'm thinking about, to plot a route for the hike. Or better yet, download KMZ files to preview hikes that I'm thinking about. Do I do this one, or that one... I've been looking for a web site that maintains a database of these sorts of files, but I've had no luck finding one. Has anyone else come across one? Quote
+Cache'n'Carey Posted May 19, 2007 Posted May 19, 2007 backpacker.com has a fairly extensive database of hikes you can download and preview, complete with writeups and photos. They have partnered with Trimble Outdoors, and you can access many of the hikes from the Trimble site as well. If you use Google Earth, you may have noticed that you can view the hikes from Trimble automatically in Google Earth now. It used to be a little more work. I did check out a few sites where you could upload your own hikes, but I can't find them right now. I didn't find any worth using so I lost track of them. I'll keep looking and post if I find where I put the url's. Quote

+DammitNanet Posted May 29, 2007 Posted May 29, 2007 Wow that's a great site. Thanks Mopar. I've been downloading my hikes into google maps for some time now. I just registered and even downloaded some local trails. Quote

+cmilono Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 I, too, have been keeping my tracks as GPX files, from Bora Bora to Cinque Terra... TrailRegistry.com and GPXchange.com are good sites, but not much traffic. LocalHikes.com has quite a bit of stuff, but they aren't accepting new Reporters and there isn't as much near my home as I'd like. http://www.localhikes.com/ is fee based and it feeds National Geo -> http://www.trailsillustrated.com/topo/search.cfm which won't let you upload... IT SURE WOULD BE NICE IF Groundspeak WOULD LET PEOPLE UPLOAD THESE SORTS OF FILES! Quote
+marcjboudreau Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 If you check out the trail wiki on http://www.clubtread.com, there is a new-ish database there as well. For uploading and trading waypoints and track files (in gpx format). It's a great hiking resource for BC and is beginning to expand to other places as well. Quote
MarcusArelius Posted April 16, 2008 Posted April 16, 2008 BC is a little too far north but if you hike in the US Northwest we now have a great hiking resourse thanks to a local geocacher. NW Trails Quote
