magnuscache
Hi all. Newbie here. I'm toying with the idea of putting together a car club event that combines driving the cars with finding caches over a distance of, say 250 miles. The event combines getting to drive our cars and some friendly competition in finding various caches along the way. I'm sure there are some threads that already cover this sort of activity but I am new and not sure what to search for. I would appreciate any pointers that you might have. Thanks Quote Link to comment
+BornAdventures
We have had 2 events (Click here and here) similar to what your proposing, they were great fun. 250miles is quite a long way for the event, remember lots of geocachers have small children and I can think of nothing worse than a child nagging that they want to go home. Events like this do a lot to introduce geocaching to the general population. Good Luck! Quote Link to comment
magnuscache
Thanks for the reply. Although I understand the child issue, our car club has only two-seaters, which cuts back on children attending. Quote Link to comment
+Team Dubbin
Thanks for the reply. Although I understand the child issue, our car club has only two-seaters, which cuts back on children attending. So this is only for the people in your car club? Also the price of gas might hurt a bit for a 250 mile event. Quote Link to comment
magnuscache
I'd like for it to be an event open to any car club, but the initial focus was the "local" club. I'd say anyone with an interest in driving for fun would be invited. After polling the members it looks like most people would not want to travel more than 500miles, including the caching event. That's why I picked 250 as the mileage I'd like to expand it to include other car clubs eventually, but I'd like to start on a small scale first and then expand. Although gas might be expensive, we don't drive for transportation in these events: we spend this money to have some fun, just like some people spend money to play golf or whatever. +Team Dubbin
I guess you need to find out how many people in your club is into geocaching. Quote Link to comment

Thanks Do not make the event timed, as it encourages speeding and racing. Instead, maybe just the most number of checkpoints. Quote Link to comment
magnuscache
Jamisjockey, You are correct: the whole reason I am considering the geocaching is to prevent speeding and racing on the public roads. "The friendly competition" would consist of geocaching. Or taking digital pictures of something at each checkpoint instead of finding a cache. Then download and award points at the end of the run.
