runyan621 Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 what is a good, affordable GPS system to use for geocaching? Quote
+briansnat Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 (edited) What do you consider affordable? A new handheld GPS will run anywhere from $55 to $500. All will find caches and a $55 dollar one will find a cache as well as a $500 one. Its just a matter of which features you want. More features = more money. Edited August 7, 2006 by briansnat Quote

+briansnat Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 (edited) For $55 you can pick up a Garmin Geko 101. Seeing as it has recently been discontinued, you can probably find it for less than $55. Its a good, small unit that will find a cache as well as any unit. The downside is that it doesn't have a PC connection, so if you get even semi serious about geocaching you might find yourself looking to upgrade in a few months. +team5150 Posted August 7, 2006 Posted August 7, 2006 Wally world has the Garmin Etrex Legend for 117 + shipping, it is a very good starter unit, has mapping capabilitites, and you can download caches straight to the unit vs. inputting them individually by hand. Plus if you buy at Wally World you can always return it to the nearest store if you have a problem with it or just don't like it. Good luck and welcome to the fun!!! Quote

If you hear of great sales on the geko, please let me know. I am using GPS in my science classroom soon and need a few more units. The budget won't be approved until January, so they are going to have to come of out my pocket--actually once the budget is approved there own't be spare money for "frivolous" purchases (which is what "they" deemed the GPS units last year--even though I wanted them, the physics teacher wanted them, and the world geography teachers wanted them! ....So I give up, I'll buyt them myself, since I don't think the uses I am putting them to will be frivolous---but still, the cheaper the better. More directly in response to the original poster: I started out with the Garmin eTrex Legend. It was a fantastic starter unit. They sell from about $120-$150 now, sometimes less if you can catch them on sale. I would definitely recommend you look at a Legend. Edited August 8, 2006 by Team Neos Quote
