+AllWright Posted June 30, 2006 Posted June 30, 2006 I've done some internet searching, and can't find any software that allows you to enter a starting coordinate, then enter a bearing and distance, and that then outputs an ending coordinate. My GPS won't do it, except crudely with the cursor, so I'm looking for a software solution. I found one where you could enter coordinates and get the bearing and distance, but it's pretty cumbersome to work backwards, particularly when the coordinates had to be in decimal degrees and the distance only output in kilometers. If I knew the spherical geometry, I'd write something myself, but I don't. Any ideas? Quote

I have used geocalc and it works very well & is easy to use. you can get it here. http://www.fizzymagic.net/Geocaching/GeoCalc/GeoCalc.html Edited June 30, 2006 by hogrod Quote
+EScout Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 AllWright: You may want to double check your GPSr. Most of them have the waypoint projection feature, which is often hard to find/buried in the menus. For "in the field" calculations, I highly recommend the PalmOS program: Navigate Quote
Grasscatcher Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 Topografix Expert GPS does it perfectly and very easily and very accurately. Quote
+AllWright Posted July 3, 2006 Author Posted July 3, 2006 Thanks for the input, everyone. GeoCalc does look very good, and simple, too. My Explorist XL will not do projections. I've read the manual cover to cover. The only method is to move the cursor and watch the display's bearing and distance readouts and try to get it close - it's a pain. One of these days, I might just have to spring for a Palm. Quote
+EScout Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 (edited) Yes, I believe that your XL does not do projections, similar to the 400,500,and 600 originally. The firmware update to these units added that feature as well as improved geocaching features. Hopefully, a firmware update to the XL will do the same. Edited July 4, 2006 by EScout Quote

I was trying to do this a couple of weeks ago with my 60CS! heres the where/how for projection on the 60cs: hit find, waypoints, select waypoint you want to project from, on the screen that list waypoint coords/note hit menu key and select project waypoint. now just fill in the bearing, distance, and unit of measurement. hope that helps. +ergomaniac Posted July 4, 2006 Posted July 4, 2006 Cachemate will also do waypoint projections. Quote
