scolba
Hey guys! this is my first post here. I have been using my GPS more and more lately, and I found something today that I don't think is really a benchmark, but I dunno. I have the Garmin US Topo on my GPS currently, and originally saw it as an "X" on the map by the side of the road on the way to the lake today. So we stopped on the way home to see what it was and I snapped a pic of it. Can you guys help me identify it?? Thanks!! Scott Edited June 15, 2006 by scolba Quote Link to comment
humanloofa
Looks like some kind of trail marker, any trail nearby? Quote Link to comment
scolba
no, i sure didn't see one. It was kind of right in line inbetween two fields. If you have the garmin topo, thers actually a marker number for it, too! wierd.... Coordinates: N40 09.348 W88 55.066 Quote Link to comment
dragon0987
looks like a right of way marker , but they are ussally marked R.O.W. Quote Link to comment
scolba
this seems like kind of a dumb question, but what is a right of way marker for? similar to a benchmark? Quote Link to comment
dragon0987
right of way markers ussaly mark a "path" for utility easments, i use to install fences and seen alot of markers similiar to this but were always marked R.O.W. , here is a link to a surving standard http://www.ilga.gov/commission/jcar/adminc...700000560R.html Quote Link to comment
dragon0987
i just googled concrete markers in illinois 101 tr came accross this : 91. Vermilion County, TR 101, District 5, Contract No. 91187, Construction of a five span, precast prestressed concrete deck beam bridge carrying TR 101 over North Fork of Vermilion River 1/4 mile west of Alvin. 90 Working Days. this came from here http://www.dot.state.il.us/press/r121602.html Quote Link to comment
dragon0987
i also looked up coords on topo and it looks like this would be a benchmark for the road elevation of 725 ft, if benchmark is right word still new to all this but did study some surving stuff for cad design hope this helps Quote Link to comment
scolba
hum.......i think it would make more sense to be a right of way marker, than anything. there was someold fence remnants right in line with that post....so i dunno...we were in DeWitt county. Vermillion county is 2 counties north of that marker. so i think that its probably something different than that... thanks for your help though! Quote Link to comment
Team Neos
I think it is a marker used for surveying land using the township-range method. Wiki on the Public Land Survey System This would be a good question to ask the guys over in the benchmarking forum. Maybe a mod would move it over there for you?
