Meades Ranch Monument

Considering the historical significance and probable of limited access its a shame there isn't a better picture of the Meades Ranch Disk

I sure would like to see what it looks like. Anybody live near Lucas, Kansas?

Pretty close but not that close.

 

I have several times thought of making the trek from SW Missouri.

It is the origin of the North American Datum 1927 (NAD27).

I only live 250 miles from there and I am planing getting there before the end of the contest. Nothng like standing right in the middle of things

I would really like to get there.

We would have to call 24 hours in advance to gain permission according to data sheet.

 

I am not bashful I will call.

 

I have done it many a time.

 

I will be about 50 miles away here on June 14th.

From the National Geodetic Survey Frequently Asked Questions page:

 

The North American Datum of 1927 (NAD 27) is "The horizontal control datum for the United States that (was) defined by (a) location and azimuth on the Clarke spheroid of 1866, with origin at (the survey station) Meades Ranch." ... The geoidal height at Meades Ranch (was) assumed to be zero. "Geodetic positions on the North American Datum of 1927 were derived from the (coordinates of and an azimuth at Meades Ranch) through a readjustment of the triangulation of the entire network in which Laplace azimuths were introduced, and the Bowie method was used." (Geodetic Glossary, pp. 57)

So what is the new "valid" number to reach them at Meade's Ranch?

 

I will have to ask for permission to give that out.

I have correspondence going now.

 

What did you ask?

 

I asked all kinds of things.

Mainly for permission to go up to the mark.

They will be supplying a vehicle to take me my wife and 2 grand daughters.

 

What was their response?

 

It took a great deal to get the number.

They said yes and that it was very hard to get ahold of them.

I was also told that they do not let very many people up there.

 

I will try to post the details as sent.

It was the best one I have recovered to date...well there is one more that I will post soon.

 

We made it to the 49th Paralell as well the furthest point reached by the Expedition.

The Only Lewis and Clark Monument listed as that and also Monument next to it.

It was a 6000 mile journey and we have all but completed the whole trail.

The final event is on time and we are once again a little ahead of schedule.

Great pictures of the Monument the monument and Glacier National Park in bacckground.

 

It will take me a while to get the 14 day trip downloaded and logged.

We did meet up with the Corps of Discovery II at Lolo Pass, Travelers Rest.

One of the New Lewis and Clark coins will actually travel the real route from the Confluence of the Yellowstone on the Missouri to St. Louis where we will meet up at the event scheduled for the 23rd of September.

I traded coins with one of the Corps.

 

Maybe add a few points to the contest as well.

I am jealous! That benchmark, despite being fairly new, is somewhat of a benchmarking mecca due to its historic significance. It is also great that some of the original reference marks remain.

There is a geocacher named "RattlingCrew" that has apparently had a coin minted depicting the Meades Ranch monument. He posted a note in the GeoCoins section stating he had 500 minted and they are trackable. Only place he is selling them is Ebay as far as I can tell.
