Now I'm Scared To Go Looking!

On those urban hides, if it's too crowded I've left some for another day. I've also used the 'car hood up' or 'on the phone' or 'waiting for a friend to catch up with me' covers. I started out trailing along with another friend, but now do it on my own. Never a problem with the law to date.

Now...I did have a couple spot me in (what I thought was) an isolated spot..I'd gotten a little enthusiastic about edging me way out over a drop to look when this couple appeared from nowhere. They peered at me, whispering between themselves as they walked on by. Then I saw them reach for the phone. Uh-oh...figured I was going to have to explain myself to the 5-0. But not for quiet what I thought...apparently they thought I was going to fling myself off the edge! Honest..I had to explain that I had no intention of doing myself in. I guess finding a strange person in a spot no normal person would probably be in...and worse, I had dropped my jacket, GPS, etc on the ground while I hunted so it looked like I'd shed all my worldly posessions...was more then they knew what to make of!

Usually I find that people rarely pay as much attention to us as we think they are. If you act like you know exactly what you're doing and are doing something perfectly normal, few people will stop to even consider what you're up to. I cache with my dog in tow when I can - gives me company and a built in excuse for almost any situation :)

I was leaving a cache after it had gotten dark, and it had started to rain. After driving a few minutes, I noticed the car behind me was following me very closely. It annoyed the heck out of me, so I slowed down from my usual 5 mph over the speed limit, to driving exactly the speed limit. Within less than a minute the red and blue lights came on. I pulled over immediately, and got my license, and insurance card ready, and got ready to explain what I had been doing, assuming that the police officer had seen me caching and had thought my behavior was suspicious. After waiting a few minutes, I rolled down my side window and noticed in my side view mirror that there was TWO cars behind me. I thought it was unusual that they had backup already there, and thought that maybe someone had called them on me. The cop walks up to the car and without even looking at any ID, says "it's ok, you can go". I thought it was odd, and asked what the problem was. He said, "I was pulling HIM over", and points to the car directly behind me, which I then noticed was not a cop after all... <_<
