Conversion Of Mmmm To Ddddd

This has probably been asked, or it is somewhere on the website, so forgive me..but I'd like some help quick as I would like to take some kids from a rec center to this cache this afternoon...

We figured out this Cryptoquiz cache, but our numbers are off..I emailed the owner for some help, here is his response:

 

did you remember that there are several formats for Lat-long?

The numbers you have for CryptoQuiz are correct. N DD.DDDDDº W DD.DDDDDº

The format you are used to is DD MM.MMM

 

Here are my numbers:

 

N46 degrees 68.692

W92 degrees 28.350

 

Can anyone tell me how to convert it or can someone tell me what the answer is??

Im sorry, but asking for answers to a puzzle cache in the forums is in poor taste.

 

The cache owner put time and effort into setting it up and wouldn't like it if others spoiled it for him.

There was quite a bit more to it that just getting the numbers for figuring it out..we had the whole puzzle figured out, but needed to find out how to do such a conversion...sorry

Ooooooo... Very easy. In fact he told you almost exactly how to make it right. Reread his response again and again. It'll eventually make sense.

My apologies for mis-understanding.

 

Heres how to convert:

 

N 41 12.345

W071 54.321

 

There are 60 minutes in a degree. If you take the minutes portion and divide by 60, you will get decimal degrees:

 

12.345 / 60 = .20575

 

54.321 / 60 = .90535

 

Thus the converted coordinates would be:

 

N 41.20575

W071.90535

I did find a link to a university website and plugged in the numbers, but I came up with something a little different from yours..the numbers I got from that website are very close to his other puzzle caches, so I'm going to try them..but I'll bring yours along also, in case my results were wrong. I thought maybe you had probably reversed a couple of numbers..good thing you told me..we might have hiked to the next state! The kids had a great time figuring the puzzles out, now the real fun begins!!
