+RedHeadedStranger
I'm going on vacation shortly and of course I'm taking my GPS but are we allowed to use them on the plane ? Quote Link to comment
+MattandLaura
depends on the airlines. I just flew on Alaskan and they said no GPS. Ask the pilot seemed to be the best approach in previous threads. Quote Link to comment
+Jamie Z
Oh yeah... RHS... 'Fore I forget. Maybe. Ask the pilot as you board the plane. Jamie Quote Link to comment
+Prime Suspect
This has been discussed many times before. But apparently, we're not supposed to say that in this forum any more. American Airlines has a written policy against it, as do some others. In some cases, it's up to the pilot. Rybren
I've used my GPS on Air Canada and other airlines without a problem. On one flight (pre 9/11) I was even invited to ride in the cockpit's jumpseat to provide position reports and groundspeed readouts to the pilots because the DC-9 that we were riding in wasn't GPS equipped. I can virtually guarantee you that it wouldn't happen today. Quote Link to comment
techtreker
I flew on United Airlines in November and was told I could use my GPS. The stewardess even stopped by to ask me how fast we were going. Quote Link to comment

+barondriver
I flew on America West from Phoenix to Wichita yesterday and used my Legend..it was a Canadair Regional Jet. I had visited with a relief Captain on the way down and he said that it would be okay to use it..so I decided to try. To get a signal I had to have the unit real close to the window but it did well once it locked on. The stewardess came by and mentioned that she didn't think that I was supposed to use it since it was receiving a signal but she checked with the crew and they said that it was okay. I saw 613 miles per hour and it was fun watching the towns go by. I only used it from level flight til we headed down..but it was fun. I have used it quite abit in personal planes and find it works as well or better than some aviation handheld units..just no aviation database. Quote Link to comment
+Glenn
Just curious. How much training do you get in RFI and RF devices? I was told on a flight that I couldn't use my GPS but my Handspring (Palm) was okay. On the same flight a guy in the seat in front of me was asked to turn off his mini disc player. The reason was because it had a laser in it. Did this mean if he had a tape player he could use that? P.S. Always ask. Sometimes the airlines policy isn't the captains policy. - Lone Rangers Quote Link to comment
